Know a few

Let's start with theose wonderful people at Marches 4x4 who organise the British Off Road Championship - First Safari w/e of 8th April (Yes a shameless plug, but it'll be my first try)
Of course there is the AWDC who will probably have events closer to you. Traditionally it seems that AWDC ran a southern championship, with the North covered by NORC. Then many local clubs have their own series, eg Midland off road club

Can't say that I've seen a leafer on the BORC, and only the odd one on the Hillrally, and that was after it had leapt off the side of a mountain (proving that being called the "Bayliss Indestructable" was correct)

Try to get to the odd safari, and see if it's for you.

Marches 4x4 would be glad of marshalls if you (or anyone else) would like a trip to Driffield, see their website for details

There's a Ford V6 engined Leafsprung racer locally - up for very reasonable money.  I know it's not going to be a front runner, but then neither am I!  What sortof costs are involved per race?

Got to go to work now or I won't be able to afford it....

We have entered the for the full BORC seies, so it works out at £100 per event, but it would be possible to enter a single weekend event at £120 or a single day for £60, I would expect that other series have similar costs.

Of course, as we are just starting, there have been a number of other costs. Helmets are not cheap, and a race suit is recommended, plus we decided to go for new harnesses. Then the car has needed a bit of attention, lots of new ES9000s and other little bits. We will also have to get ourselves a set of the Matador tyres (but this wouldn't be the case for other series as they don't run with control tyres).

Then there is the cost of replacing all the bits that we will break during events, but I have no idea how much this will be.

Oh, I'll also be having to pay for Katy to go on holiday, she's not bad at marshalling but would make a useless co-driver - she gets confused over left and right!

Oh yes, there's more, that I forgot.

Need to get the racer to events, so that'll be weekend hire of trailer, at least until I can get one of my own.

I suppose fuel for the events would also need considering. 3.9 V8 will give low single figures, lets assume 5mpg, each run is 5 miles, so a gallon a run. Somewhere in the region of 10 runs per day, so about 20 gallons a weekend...... er I think I'll stop thinking about this.

just off to see if ebay will allow an ad for a kidney.

ok ill throw my 10p in


the 90 i was comping would use £60 of fuel for 1 comp (10 laps 2 miles upwards,longest being 5/6 miles)

entry was £20 per event,

helmet was £60 (make sure u get the correct spec,i know some1 who didnt & failed scrutineering at his first event & couldnt play)

in 2 years comping (8th overall in championship & 2nd novice) i broke 2 half chafts & wreked 1 wheel & tyre,last year i bent the chassis & ripped of the front shocks,that was the final event for the racer,

at each event i would carry 1 diff,2 sgort,2 long front shafts,2 cv joints,enough oil & gaskets to do the front twice,2 spare wheels,
fuel the racer on the way to the event & have 2 jerry cans as standby,
average MPG was between 1 & 8mpg

actually getting to the point of this post,outwith the cost of buying a motor,you can comp slightly competively for £70 an event

You forget the hidden costs, Range Rover into 3' diameter Elm tree, head on at about 40 mph, funny but tree came better off. Cost, total right off.

QT 90"of a hairpin corner, barrel roll down a 10' bank. Cost, half shaft, wings, bonnet, Pride, and 2 broken ribs. ( i was lucky).

But its one big happy family in the pits, everybody, there to enjoy it.

Mikee's right, comping doesn't have to be expensive.

There is a certain S1 that pulls a caravan to an event, competes, then troddles home quite happily. The philosphy is based on vehicle survival.

Sure it doesn't win, but it finishes, which puts it higher up the pecking order than some much more exotic machinery.  ....and it looks soooo cool!

Lets hear it for class systems! We're not competing against Pro-trucks and Mattserattis. We're competing against 90s, 110s, Disocs and the like. We all just happen to be using the same bit o' turf to do it.

We did a rough-cut math-out, and we still reakon comping is cheaper to get into than Winch Challenges. We'd need a base vehicle for either, we'd need a trailler (ideally) for either. We brought a prepped racer for no more money than we could have brought the base vehicle for (ta, Henry for finding it).

However, it just might not be for you. There will be events kicking off local to yourself - trundle along and have a peruse. If you think you like it. Go for it.

Mind you a leaf sprung racer might make a funky little play thing anyway. And you could always lop a winch on it!  :wink:

Ah-hem, excuse me, I've got a lot of trophys from the wrong seat of that little series one you know... :lol:

It has probably won its class in the Hillrally championship more than any other vehicle.  I admit it is a bit of a struggle now that it is in the same class as a Tdi 90, but up against Freelanders, Suzukis and other series LRs we could hold our own.

The thing about trees - the key is to miss them, that way they need cost you nothing.  You can't plan for accidents, just drive within the limits of your skills and that of your vehicle.

Eeyore - if Wolfie is likely to rely on your call so much then I'm not sure I'd want to sit alongside him!  :wink:  Drive it as you see it - co-driver info is always the added extra.

In terms of costs - I told myself for many years I couldn't afford it, now I can't afford not to.  Go along to an event and suss it out.  I don't know many folk who don't come back hooked.
