No idea! Going to have a go at replacing the swivels and seals this weekend so maybe, just maybe I might know a little bit more about the mysteries of the front turny bits when I've finished.

Well if you do a 1/2 shaft and its at the diff end you have to take the diff out. But you done have to if you do a cv joint.

CV's are the first thing you hope goes first,if you start stregthening things up more serious damage could result elsewhere.

personally id run 3 piece cv joints & machine the stubby so it breaks first, thus being a 5 min job to change (VV old rangie style )

if you run the 1 piece cv joints & it explodes its likely to lock the wheel up & mean u have to strip the hub & rebuild just to continue

I'd go with that Mike, old RR style axles then you want it to be the stub axle, same both sides, easy and cheap to find, no grease to spill changing it with a magnet on a stick.  I think the CAM axles Dom bought have a 'fuseable' shaft in their design too but I like your idea of machining them, any pictures?

Only problem with the older CVs with the outer shaft is that they are weaker than some of the other types... so whilst you have an easy outer shaft to change, you are still more likely to break the CV anyway.   If you run a weakened outer shaft that will break before the (weaker) CV joint, then you'll be forever changing them !
