Gearbox oil
« on: April 15, 2006, 13:54:20 »
Here we go, probably a stupid question. Looking at changing the gearbox oil. I know the transfer gearbox needs 90EP and the manual says the main gearbox needs ATF. But where is the main gearbox drain/filler? Found it on the transfer box but is the gearbox one only on automatics????

Cheers again  :?

Hi.

The locations mentioned above are correct but I think the filler plug is T55, not T50. Apologies of I am wrong. Don't drain the oil until you have made sure you can remove the filler plug, incase it has been overtightened. Use a new washer on the drain plug when refitting. Have you tried the Difflock Evolution oil for this box? It's worth it.

The transfer box drain is just forward of the casing rear face, & the filler is in the rear face of the T'box, 1/2" drive if I remember correctly.

Good luck, Dan

Wish I read this saturday, need to buy a new washer tomorrow its now dripping on the side of the road. Is there an easy way of filling the gearbox? Ended up removing the front prop!

Transfer box had a splash of water and a tiny drop of black treacle. No oil    That'll explain that strange noise. Now gone

Just re-read your post, made more sense the secongd time :?

I always spill oil doing the 'box too, try topping up a 1 litre bottle to about 2/3 full and don't try to empty the whole thing into the 'box.  Otherwise yo need a lift pump, they are available, at a price.  Might treat myself though.

Just watch for a leak around the front output shaft for the prop..........always leak on them.

Thanks, I'll look out for that, could explain why there was nothing in it!

That was lucky, usually takes me 4 or 5 attempts of reading what I wrote for me to understand! Thats pretty much how I filled the box but with the prop removed. Took about a 1/3 of a bottle each time

You were right Richie, its the front output shaft seal gone, dripping about once a second so at this rate its going down pretty fast. Back to the shop tomorrow :?

Cheers

No probs mate.........also if that is leaking then check for up and down play on the output flange...........it more than likely need to be tightened up (very tight)

Hi again.

Check out the shop at www.Difflock.com for an excellent product - Oilsafe. It will make the oil changes much easier & cleaner. Highly recommended.
