Knackered window wiper motor or mechanism?
« on: April 15, 2006, 15:38:12 »
The window wipers will barely move across the windscreen, i took the dashboard off and the bit that covers the wiper motor, the motor still runs i'm not sure if its knackered or not or if its the mechanism that moves the wipers anyone got any ideas, and how easy is it to change the mechanism?

Cheers.

Had the same problem with my 110. Turned out to be the drive cable that runs from the motor to the wiper. The cable had snapped between the passengers and driver wiper.

Reasonably easy job to repair though.

I suspect that the crossheads gears are worn.
These are the gears that drive the wiper arm.
The gears are driven by a steel wire rack.
So.
You will need the top rail off.
Undo the bolts holding the wheel box together.
Take the back plate off and have a look.
If the gears are worn simply turn them 180 deg in the wheel box.

You should be able to look inside the wiper motor gear.Take the plate off and run the motor. The rack is driven by a crank on the wheel.

Hey it's a long long time since I took those things apart.
Thirty years at least. So you see I'm working from memory.

Turns out the pin that turns the wiper blade in the wheel box is siezed had to grind it off and now i will have to buy a new wheel box, does the wheelbox come with the gear and the pin that drives the wiper arm?
