PC sound cards
« on: April 18, 2006, 12:56:03 »
I want to take the sound card out of my win 98 pc and put it into my win xp pc as the one in my xp pc seems to have died and i am [!Expletive Deleted!] off with no sound now after at least 6 months of no noise except an annoying bleep when an email comes in.

What does a sound card look like? Is it an actual card or is it inbuilt onto something and non removeable?

It depends on what motherboard you have? If its onboard sounf the speaker out put will be close to the mouse/keyboard/com ports. If its a sound card it will then be the other side of the video card.

Find where the speakers plug in, It its in a white slot, its a PCI sound card and can be moved. If its in a black slot its a ISA sound car, it can be moved but it might not fit in the new pc. If its not in a white or black slot it can not be moved as its on-board sound.

could be onboard sound as where the speakers plug in it is right by a socket that looks like the monitor plug and i cant get to it. i have followed a wire from the internal speaker and that goes direct to mother board. Grr

how easy would it be to link up my pc to my dads as i have 2 network cards and a cable. would i be able to hear sound through his pc? and also how easy is it to upgrade a win 200pc to an xp one? will i loose everything on the win 200 pc?

it could be something simpler like the speakers you are using to listen to have gone south for the winter

if you have a pair of headphones, plug them into the same slot the speakers plug into and see if you still hear the same noise

if not then speakers are shot, if so then you might as well buy a cheap soundcard from somewhere like scan or ebuyer as they arent that expensive nowadays

my flat screen has in built rubbish speakers and i normaly use the speakers on my desk and both dont give out any sound.

I keep getting an error thing up in the device manager saying it cannot start and wont run properly. I found somewhere once that it is not digitaly signed and i have tried up dating the driver but it comes back saying there is no update higher than the one on my pc.

have you got a camera phone or something to take a picture of the rear of your pc, the picture will show if its onboard or a pci slot or isa slot

how long have you had this machine incidentally?

It "sounds" like its on-board sound. It also looks like a driver problem. If its O/B sound you can disable it and put a sound card in.

But try updating the driver.

I do have a camera phone but cant download to pc. I can text it to you if you like.

I have had this pc since January 2004 I think

It was a Staples special own and wish I had more money at the time to buy a decent one as the hard drive has died once and the cooling fans in the back have both died in the past too.

James,

Are the sound jacks part of the main set of connections like this?

This is onboard sound, whereby the sound card is integrated into the motherboard.

Or are they further down the case, seperated, looking like this?

This is seperate, and the sound card is an additional plug-in card.

Either one can be changed for a new one (you can disable the on-board Audio and use your own separtate card) as long as you have the available free slots.

If you have the slots - I probably have a spare PCI (white slot) sound card in my "spares box" you can have.

well I tried to take a photo but my camera is playing up now

It looks more like the top picture on both pc's of mine.

If you do have a spare one kicking around that would be fab. Surely you would want something for it?

Is it for your XP PC?  I have the card, but need to get the drivers.  If it's going into an XP machine, then XP will probably already have the drivers (I will test it).  98 however will be clueless without the software.

PM me your address, and I will test the card to be 100% sure it's working okay.  No cost.  It's been sat in my spares box for about a year.

No problem.  Found the driver CD too, so you should be covered for either machine.

Tested OK in a Win2K PC I have on my workbench - so I'll post it off today.
