What and where to buy?
« on: April 18, 2006, 14:51:16 »
I know this is probably an oft-repeated thread, but I can't see it on the history pages ...

I will have about £3k to spend on a 90. Probably go for a van and then convert to SW as funds allow.

For this price bracket, what should I be looking for? It won't be my daily transport, but will need to be fairly reliable. And I have absolutely no idea how to use "tools".

Obviously private sale would cost less than trade, but I like the safety net of a dealer. There's loads of places selling a wide variety of kit round Leeds, but the variance in prices is bewildering. Ex-Mods are tempting, but a few places seem to want nearly £6k - is my budget really too low?

Can anyone recomend somewhere that has looked after them reasonably well?

Thanks

Your budget's only too low if you don't mind waiting for a while and looking round.

Many Defenders at, or under the 3k mark are fairly ratted or rotten (look out for serious rust in the outriggers, the rear cross member or the bulkhead. Of these, the bulkhead is fairly critical and is the most timeconsuming (and expensive) to change.

Expect to get a non-Tdi engine, unless you're lucky.

Vans are harder to obtain than station wagons.

Surprisingly, Range Rovers and Discoverys offer better value of money than Defenders (they were victims of higher rates of depreciation).

Having said that - some really good examples can be found and had for that kinda money - it really is just a case of being a bit carefull, thats all.

As for where to look - the words 'world' and 'oyster' could probably be applied!

Good luck with the search!

cheers

I'd be tempted to keep an eye out in the "for sale posts" on various off road/landy sites. But then again there are a few good vehicles on ebay.. just take a mud club member with you who has a bit of knowledge on things that can cause problems/cost you money.
I paid £2175 for my 90, then another £3500 getting it sorted. But now Ive got a very very good condition Landy :D .
