Fuel Guage and MPG

My fuel guage keeps bobbing up and down instead of staying still when am driving along so i cant get an idea of how much fuel i have.

Also how many MPG should i get out of a 1.3 Samurai?

Hi there, Suzukis' aren't renowned for their economy 25- 30 mpg may be a little more if driven gently. I am a big Suzuki fan but I would not drive one on the road regularly. Tarmac is not the best place for them but off road well they can do remarkably well. The fuel gauge I suspect you may have a iffy connection from the sender. When I ran a Vitara with a non working fuel gauge on the road I would fill it up each time 42 litres max and trip the odometer each time.

The fuel tank sender on top of the tank corrodes really badly.
Usually the first thing to rot off is the low fuel light trigger, followed by the fuel gauge connections, followed by the fuel return feed spigot.
Expect them all. lol.

best thing to do is lower the tank, clean the corrosion off, and cover it all in thick grease, extends its life a bit.

On the economy side, expect 25-30mpg as stated already. Mebbe a bit more with free wheel hubs, but 30 is good for a Sammy.

It gets better if you junk the awesomely complicated stock carb, and fit a twin choke webber/nikki and drive carefully, but Its never gonna get what you'd call good.

Mines all jacked up and silly, and still gets under 30 mpg with a Isuzu Tdi engine.

on my old sj i used to guess some where in the middle of where the neelde swings, my sj410 did 130 miles on a full tank

But how big was the fuel tank??  I.e. how much to fill up to get 130 miles?

I put £34 in my Samurai the other day but it was right down on the bottom of the gauge. The gauges are made by Walt Disney I think as mine bobs up & down like bl**dy Tigger all the time!. :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

Haynes manual says that tank holds 10.6 Gallons.

And they are such a piddly little scale.... they seem to wander by half a tank sometimes  :lol: I reckon I am getting around 30mpg so far. Which is double what I have been used to, so in my book they are positively economical  :D And it is a joy to fill up and not have to pay £65  :shock:

Same here mate, I used to run a SWB 2.8 Shogun - boy could that baby drink some fuel, used to put £80 a week in it!. :shock:  :shock:  :shock:

think rich has been putting in bout £15 a week to get him to work and back.

LOL i am thinking of converting to lpg!  Think of the savings, only worry is wether a roof mounted tank would pass an mot, cos i cant find nowhere else to put it!

another problem with LPG besides where to put the tanks is having some where near by that actually sells the stuff!

round here theres like 2 places and neather are in the direction i generaly take!

And it won't be too long before it gets to over 90p per litre anyway. As soon as it's popular enough you can be sure the government will lump loads more tax on it.... Me? Cynical? Nah!

In deepest Norfolk you are lucky to get petrol, let alone LPG  :lol: My nearest petrol station is nearly 8 miles from home and doesn't even offer high octane unleaded. That's a gallon just to get there and back in the 110  :shock: I think the nearest LPG station is just outside Norwich about 20 miles away.

Well peeps my old E reg 410 didn't have a low fuel light but my K reg samurai has got one. I'm not sure which models have them and which don't.
