swivels ??
« on: April 24, 2006, 19:25:28 »
Hi there, got a 1991 v8 discovery, it has a noise ( actually it has loads) but this sounds a bit more serious than most of the others,              it comes from the off side front corner,  i jacked it up and not for the first time the wheel bearing was grumbling quite badly, (no play in the bearing just noisey)  so changed it, but i still have a noise that sounds like a dull click/clonk as you change direction, it only does this once every change, but seems to be more concerning now,   I work on the theory that its usually better to replace things at home, than on the side of the road, or worse?   P.S  I have a 10 ton hydraulic press in my garage if any one should need to use one, the neighbours dont want anymore landys or other cars round here but your more than welcolme to bring a "bit round should you need to?

if i jack up the wheel i can find no play what so ever any where in that corner or even steering ( most of thet is new any how)  but if the car is restiing on the ground i can feel some noticable play as i shake the wheel in a vertical direction, (nothing side to side)    So im guess ing top/ bottom swivels)  if it is i shall do both whilst its apart,   many thanks for any clues      hope to be able to play on salisbury plain work permitting

P.P S  im pretty sure its not a cv joint as its only one single click/ clonk, and replaced a few of these already,

P.P.Ps  Has any one got a spare drivers side rear/top alpine window glass??  got a bit inclined whilst laning the other day and a tree took it out for me    I am in the basingstoke ares or i have a friend in maidenhead if thats closer ?? many thanks

Is it the Railko bush type swivel or twin roller bearings?

Just done this on my nearside corner - it's a set of tapered roller bearings - you can get kits from Dingocroft. Not a hard job (if the bolts holding the swivel pin in don't shear) just messy fro all the swivel grease

Yeah - I still have a little bit of vibration coming through the chassis when I put the power on, it's a cardon propshaft on mine and only 8 months old at that so shouldn't be UJ's or anything, and I can't find any evidence of them being duff either. I think the only thing I can do is wait and see what breaks!

Which will probably be when I drive down to Y Rali next week  :?

<Drifting wildly off topic  :)  >
What are you doing at YRBC?
Look out for us in the blue 110, and wave/cheer/mercilessly take the .... as appropriate.
We'll have white and blue 110 hard tops somewhere in the camping area, come over and say hi.
We are nearly ready, just a bit of welding, fitting the new and shiny plumbed extinguisher, a rear hub oil seal, and <not sure but there must be lots> to do now. At least there's a bank holiday.
Panicing should start soon.

Oh, yes, got to now drive 30 odd miles to get a replacement tax disc as the idiot in the post office can't tell the difference between a 4 and an 8.

Regards

Wolfie

We'll be there too - watch out for anything black and white!

It looks a bit like there's going to be a bit of a mud-club contingent.  At least two competitors and at least two officials that I know of!

Lostboy, good to hear that you'll be down - look forward to seeing you.  Is there a gang of you coming down?

I have no idea what I'm doing - I just voluenteer (sorry about hte speeling, been at it: http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?p=222731#222731 ) and find out what I get told to do when I get there!

Umm, well I think I'm coming with about a dozen tents in the back of my motor for other people, the Kisda crew are coming, but sadly depleted due to broken bones. Don't think there's many others from up here though.

Look out for a green disco with almost the number of the beast on it...

But may be kidnapping a few and bringing them down anyway hehehe!
