why do people do it
« on: May 23, 2006, 17:20:14 »
Just got home from work to find my neighbour having his drive dug up which is fine apart from the fact he has got the pikies in to do it! I gave him a price to landscape the whole garden and do the drive and he said it was expensive, which is fine not fussed if we did it or not but why do people use pikies?? he will be wondering why he used them when is drive has sunk after two months because there is no type one under it. they think they are saving money   we caught a pair trying to steal tools from our van last year, they dont pay taxes and drive stolen motors and use stolen tools. i cant see what makes people think it is a good idea to give them money? Im also concerned that when i got in from work one of them was at the botom of our drive on his phone looking at the two off road prepeared landys on our drive there one being mine and one my dads and brotheres i just hope they dont try anything tonight!

Regards James (scared)

Take the wire of the start solenoid on the fuel pump is a favourite. Quick, and effective. Also leavi it in Low range. At least then they cant make a quick getaway. :)

Not much use to most people here, but on farms we have handy size main fuel tanks, which pikeys (or gyppos) will happily steal from. The trick here is to use a hidden fuel tank, but leave a dummy tank in an obvios location. The dummy tank can be filled with a variety of substances including sugar, water, silage aditive etc. infact anything that will ruin an engine, just make sure theres enough diesel in the tank so they don't realise.

I saw some pikies come out of an off-licence a couple of years back when I was in the Landy.  They asked how much I wanted for it, I said "more than you can afford".  As I drove off one of them punched the side, made a really loud bang.  Got quite scared as the off-licence is about 5 doors from my house, we don't have any off street parking at all.

well if he is they will have a field day they have dug it out no more than 100mm, considering the recomended amount of type one is 100mm (we always put down 150mm on drive ways to be on the safe side)and then 50mm of sand + the block its self  is 60 mm that is an absolute minimum depth of 210mm to be dug out, i wonder if he will come and ask me why i think is drive has sunk, (i hope he does)

Wiree off the starter solenoid to a very loud siren unit, availble from maplins. For best effect tie it into the headlights too.

Nothing like a car going 'LOOK I'M BEING STOLEN' to send em running for cover. Specially if they've already got in and assumed no alarm :)
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

I always find talking nicely to them but being firm when it scomes to saying no is best. We had loads in at the car dealership i used to work at....and btw they probably can easily afford your landrover and mine aswell in readies! One guy bought a van 12k walked in with used notes the following day.......
never upset them if they know where you live the police are next to useless.

CCTV isnt much use TBH. If the footage isnt perfectly clear the police wont accet this. We've had footage turned down from the £300 night sight IR cams that Tesco use and indded the internal shop cams because of poor quality before now.

If you must get one spend the money on a good colour camera and if you need night sight, a decent IR illuminator.

May be worth your neighbour contacting consumer direct on 08454 040506 http://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk/.

Through them he can get civil advice and trading stadards will be informed who may take enforcement action.

Unfortunately, its the same old story. People think cheap is good, and end up suffering for it. I can't believe your neighbour was that daft, especially with all the consumer awareness stuff on the box at the moment.
My mum in law (bless her) had one of the leaflets come through the letterbox, offering hedge removal cheap. She stupidly got them to come round and they were giving her stupid quotes as well as saying they could do the gutters cheap with UPVC, even though it was obvious they had just been done.
Luckily I was off shift and a few subtle hints like mentioning trade descriptions act, Environmental Health act and Wildlife and Countryside Act confused their poor minds and off they went. That and a few well place usages of words begining with 'F' etc.
