how do you change the UJ's on a front prop

ive never changed UJ's before so does anyone have any tips

its a disco 1 front prop

you will definatly need a vice    once you have removed the prop take out the 4 circlips.  now mark the position of the uj to the prop so that it all goes back together the same way. ( balance ). now you can use a dreft to tap out the shells on the ends of the uj. push it through one way and remove that side and then push it the other way to remove the other shell. you can use 2 sockets in a vice for this. one bigger one that the shell goes in to and one smaller one to push the shell though.

before fitting the new uj make sure everything is nice and clean. half fill the new cap shells with grease making sure roller bearings are in the correct place. now reasemble...

Hardest part is getting the circlips out as they're either stuck in the groove or just want to keep jumping back into place   New UJ was only £4.90 inc from our mate John Craddock  8)

Didn't sound like a UJ gone though, sounded more like something vibrating in the n/s/f wing. The air cleaner housing was rubbing the turret, but I packed that, even took the air intake off from in the inner wing, but the noise persisted (albeit intermitent)

The holes in circlips are tapered, so depending which way they are put in, the circlip pliers will either work a treat removing them or be a pain in the ***.


Or to put it another way, make sure you put the circlips back on with the smaller hole facing out.

Didn't have to as the new UJ had a different circlip (arrowed) that only needs long-nose pliers  8)

They may well of changed, i'm still stuck in the 80's as far as Land Rover technology is concerned. I assumed when you said circlip in your first post you ment the intenal version of the one you circuled.

The standard ones I took out are the version with the cross (but internal as you correctly pointed out) and the pain to remove (needing three hands and a screwdriver    ) I can never understand why they're made so you can't close them enough to remove  :roll:

The circled type are possibly cheaper to produce and a damned sight easier to install/remove. Land Rover may still have millions of the standard type left to use up and I still have twelve of them on my Disco :lol:  I have fitted the new type on some commercial vehicles  8)

nice photo's Lee , reminds me of the one's that came out mine ! , I'm still finding old needle bearings on the shed floor ! .
Most useful tool is a proper propshaft nut spanner (try saying that after a couple of shandy's ) from Difflock , saves fiddling around with a couple of open enders .

Getting the prop off a 200tdi isn't too bad, and no rubber coupling. There was a guy in Craddocks' who's rubber coupling had split and asked for a quote. When told it was over £40 said "for a bit of rubber, I wish it was only £4 odd like those". The parts guy told him to throw the rubber one away ad fit a 200tdi prop and flange   He went off to call a breakers he knew  :)

One of the needle rollers may have dropped so the cup won't go all the way home
