Smoke after EGR valve removal

Hi all,

A couple of weekends ago I finally got round to blanking off my EGR valve with a LR gasket and blanking plate and fitted a silicone hose from the top intercooler pipe to engine and one near the turbo - haven't done the other one from the intercooler yet as can't reach the srew head on the jubilee clip.

I've noticed that now, especially when starting up that I'm getting more smoke than I used to - generally pale grey with a slight hint of blue, which will last for about maybe 20 seconds whilst idling on the drive. Also the engine feels rougher (I think) than it used to.

This then seems to go away once warmed up, but I will then notice a belch of darker (but not black) smoke later in my journey when pulling awway at a roundabout - but pulling away really gently, so not expecting any smoke like when giving it full throttle.

Could it be that the blanking plate gasket isn't quite sealing properly when it's cold?

Is my turbo knackered?

It's about 4,000 miles since last service so was thinking it's nealry time for an oil change anyway which may make a difference, and I haven't had a chance to clean the intercooler yet, so maybe it's that - just bever used to see this pale smoke before EGR removal - even when I had unplugged the leads from the valve, but valve in place.

Any thoughts??

Maybe I'm just noticing the exhaust gases that are no longer being recirculated and what I'm seeing is the stuff that used to be turned into that lovely goo that filled up the intercooler pipes?

iirc, the egr valve recycles hot gases into the engine when its cold to help it ignite the diesel better when the engine is cold, so maybe without the hot gasses the diesel isnt burning as it should for the first 20 seconds or so.

Further to my previous question, when I started her up this morning, I dodn't get much smoke, but the whole vehicle was shaking away like a mad thing - like the engine was out of balance or something and was running a bit sluggish - a bit like a cold winters morning but worse.

Not sure how best to explain it all - started fine, but running really rough, but then seems OK when warm - maybe a bit slower than normal - and seems to be at slightly lower revs at a certain speed than normal (for example, I'd normally be at about 2000 rpm at 30 in 3rd gears and be able to change up to 4th ok - now have to push it to 2500 rpm before changing to 4th and the rpm will be only just 1800 in 4th).

Not sure if any of that makes sense (I know what I mean - honest!) but any suggestions would be great.

nope,the EGR is only in action when the engine is hot cos when it blleds the exhaust gasses intot he inlet manifold it actualy cools the incoming gases & dilutes the exhaust gases each time,

the EGR is always shut when it starts first thing due to it not being up to temp

What are the symptoms for a knackered injector? Could that account for the rough running do you think?

Yes it could, try running a couple of bottle of red-ex through it, it could be sh**ted up and not spraying properly

Hi RRB - I've been using Millers Power Plus for a while now. I was wondering if some sh*t might have got into the injectors from all the stuff coming out of the intercooler pipes - I didn't get time to flush out the intercooler and then was hoping to get an uprated one anyway...

Could it perhaps be a bit underfuelled, and burning a bit thin now that the intercooler will be cleaner?

Will book it in to the garage today anyway and warn my bank manager
