head gasket nightmare
« on: May 26, 2006, 18:39:22 »
i will start from the beginning

yesterday driving the car like in past posts was getting a shooooo noise spoke to several people as all i was getting was smoke ,smoke and more smoke so it was either the turbo or the head gasket so i decided to go for the head gasket today as i know they are common at going so 9.30 this morning up and ready and off i went ,inlet manifold off exhaust manifold off,and checked the turbo no obvious signs so carried on ,undone the head bolts pipes etc ready for the lift from start to lifting the head 2 hours i was happy at this as never done this before .reached over to the back of the head and noticed a nut lying on the bulk head foam shock horror cause as soon as i had seen it i new where it was from ,the inlet manifold at the back i think its there for when you clean it but by this it was to late as disturb the head gasket

next problem i had was figuring out the head gasket thickness ended up phoning landrover as this was a genuine landrover head gasket, incase anyone else as this problem see picture i have marked were it is shown,

now just got 1 more problem
when bought head gasket set got some bits that i dont know what they are please see picture and if you know can you let me know as fitting the head back tomorrow as just ordered head bolts ,just dont know the history of them .
all the best and thankyou

:)

 1 =  3 new  rubbers for rocker cover :)

2 =  the 4 washers are for the injectors, where they sit  in the holes, the washers go on the injectors and then place the injectors in :)

cant remember any more  sorry :)

make sure the old washers come out with the injectors as sometimes they stay in the holes

update on the nightmare

went out saturday and was suggested by a friend while the head was off why not check the piston rings so sump off undone the bolts ,pushed the pistons up 1 by 1 trying to put them back in and snapped the oil scraper (nightmare) went up to paddocks bought new piston rings for all 4 came back and did them . thought while the sump was off i will clean everything up ie oil pick up etc , put it all back together but now because everything is so tight cant start it off the battery as anyone else come up with ths problem and is it worth snatching at it also can anyone tell me how long you have to run it in for due to new piston rings being fitted. all the best and thankyou

update on nightmare 2

well managed to get the car started gave it a quick snatch and started like a dream absolute bargain for all 2 minutes of it ,then started to get a metal to metal bang or should i say tap tap tap and i was absolutely gutted so gave up on it that night and went in the house like a broken man could not beleive it.

i read the distruction manual and there was nothing in it to help me ,so off we went again actually fought about having a very expensive barbecue burgers, sausages on the bonnet (only joking) all this down to a 17m bolt in the inlet manifold as i said in the first part of this post .

well ended up taking the sump off once again and to my horror felt little bits of copper metal at the bottom so new one of the shells had slipped the only good thing is the car was only running on tick over for no more than a minute so ive got away with it ,the thing i need to know now is do i have to replace all the shells or just the set that have gone

the only good thing about doing all this i have virtually reconned the engine it needed to get done as from day 1 it had a wee smoking issue ie burning oil so needed to do the valve stem seals as they were totally gone all the best and thanks, please see pic

Before I read the end of the text the thought that went through my mind was could the new rings have been touching a carbon ring at the top of the bore, some replacement piston rings had a step in the top ring, to allow for this, also while if i I have an engine apart and working on pistons, I try to make sure I give the bores a honing to de-glaze them, helps when you are fitting new rings

At lease you got it sorted, hope the sump gasket dont leak for you

Not every problem can be solved with duct tape, and it's exactly for those situations we have WD 40
