does the transfer case have separate oil to the gearbox?
i know its all in one housing, but there is a filler on each part of the box.

the trans box is ep80/90 the main box is engine oil (dont put in gear oil cos it will naf up the oil pump)

just read that on tinternet.
that means ive have run the gear box (only round the yard) with gear oil in the main box and nowt in the trans box :oops:

no wonder it jumps out of gear.
i shall fill with correct fluids tomorrow.

If the gearbox is an LT77 type, it may contain ATF.

Thats what my O&M says and thats whats in mine.

its an LT 95 but it still jumps out of high range even though ive filled with oil :cry:

We had the same "jump out" effect on our '78 Range Rover. The final solution was to tie the lever to the "high" position with a rope. This has been working for about 20 years now without any problem.

yep using a bungie cord at the mo, but i would like to have it repaired at some point, i hope they can be done with the box in the car.

We had the box reconditioned at some point but with no effect. Thus the rope.

how many do you think Landrover would sell, if a querk of the car was it jumping out of gear?
i think its a worn selector fork, but iam not sure.

I guess you are aware of Land Rover fitting tolerances?

As I said we did not care having the strap there and drove on happily for quite some time. The reason I changed the box now was that a) the gears would not let me get back to Neutral even with force and b) I had a brand new LT95 (old stock which I bought for 130GBP) in the boot...

130 quid for a new box, wow, well done

if its not an easy fix i think mine will have the old bit of string technique.
but its a bit annoying when you spend 10 months rebuilding to find some arse on eblag has sold me a duffer.

LT95 yep engine oil (use 20W50) in the main box
EP90 in the transferbox

thats what i put in our 110 anyway
