Rubber seal around windscreen!
« on: June 07, 2006, 10:55:58 »
Anyone know were I can get the above and a rough cost?

Also if it is easy to fit yourself?

Mine is quite badly split.

Cheers.

I've only ever seen them with Windscreens I'm afraid, and I imagine that fitting it would involve removing the screen. I could be wrong though (quite likley)

As to fitting, it's not too bad a job (never done a Defender one but have done several on old Triumphs in the past) and the flat screen helps.
I would
1 Cut away the old seal to make it easy to remove. Make sure that the glass, the new seal and the bulkhead lip are clean - it doesn't take much to stress the glass and break it.
2 Fit new seal to glass.
3 Fit a thin cord or wire in the groove in the seal, overlapping it at the centre top.
4 Withe the aid of a second operator to press the glass roughly into position, slowly draw the cord out so it causes the seal to engage on the bulkhead lip.

Just be careful and it should work. Others may be along soon with more advice

Regards

Wolfie

Available from any LR parts supplier, prices start at £21 depending where you buy from. These always split after a few years and it is worth buying a new one before having a new windscreen fitted.

Although I have done windscreens in the past I have had mine done by professionals in recent years as I know how easy it is to crack a 90/110 screen.
The first time was when I bought my new heated screen and I just paid the local windscreen firm to do it for me, cost about £10 if I recall correctly. After that it was done when the windscreen was being replaced due to a large stone-chip/crack, I just paid the £40 windscreen excess and let them get on with it. I supplied a new rubber as it wasn't worth reusing the old one as it was over couple of years old by then and as I said, they split over time.
ONE LIFE, GET IT!
