bobtailing a rangie!

Hello everyone, my mates got a rangie which he wants to bobtail. Its an off road vehicle so doesn't have to be a great job but its got a rusty chassis at the back so thought that bobbing it might be a good idea. Any pictures or tips would be really helpfull. Its going to be very near the rear axle so very short!! Cheers Tom

As for the rusty rear end, if its rusted body cross member (not the chassis) then you can buy a weld in replacement which cost around £40 to buy. Like wise there are relacement parts for most of the RRC body

I've bobbed a RR and as anyone who knows me will agree I'm no mechanical wizard.

As above measure at least twice then get someone to check it carefully - I pressed ganged my wife into this checking. I also found a plumb line very useful. Also I think it's cutting things like the roof and panels that is more critical in many ways than the chassis as you can just weld bits back on to that!

Are you making a pickup which is what I did in which case the bulkhead from a Transit van mark 2 I think fits very well behind the seats with only a little cutting needed. This will restore rigidity as well.

You'll need a good strong cross member at the rear as I guess that will need to take a tow ball so I got mine made up by a better welder than me with the holes nicely sleeved. Cost me 20 quid all in - bargain.

Pickup is easy but ugly. I did take some photos but I don't know how much help they'd be.

Don't forget the electrics but maybe if it's off road only you can! Mine had to pass an MOT and it did too.

It's the horrible black one that's on the 4x4 is born DVD. Lovely motor and it transformed its performance off road I never felt too worried about stability and it just went where it was pointed.

Wow what facilities - I did mine on the drive! No ramp just step ladders to cut the roof!

I suspect that was a much better job than mine!

Then again don't be put off it can be done with very basic equipment and facilities.
