Anyone know what these are? (Bedford)

I past these the other day and wondered what they were for?
These are just south of Bedford.
My guess is for airships?
Anyone help.

hey jake, this is my neck of the woods.  
the are cardington hangers, build for airships. the one on the left is private and is used for aircraft. the taty one
the one on the right is business owned and they set fire to things in it. they build houses and flats and test building materials and stuff for fire resistance i believe. you can see them for miles can't you.

yes it is Airships, used to fly over Leighton Buzzard ( were I live)  but not seem them for a time now.

They are sheds, not hangars they were built to assemble airships in the late 1920's The airships were built by suspending the fuselage hoops from the walls and roof then assembling the skeleton insitu

I think the sheds came originally from Norfolk and were extended
both hrizontally and vertically to accomodate the R101 which crashed in northern France

The shed on the right is owned by the Buildings Research Establishment
it contains a 7 story bulding, an aircraft fuselage used for smoke and fire damage tests and a blast rig

The left hand one is empty but it is sometimes used by rock bands to test their light shows, some of the last Batman film was shot in it

Both sheds have their own weather system it can be raining inside and a nice day outside

I can see them from the front of the house about a mile away :lol:
