Yup, black and tan - made by mixing stout or Guinness (The Black) with draught beer or bottled light ale (The Tan).

Snake-bite traditionally was strongbow and breaker. Was always a cloudy drink that soon done the trick. Called a snake-bite as it numbed your mouth and if you bit your tounge or cheek you wouldn't feel it.

Coventry pubs would give you your ticket just for ordering a snake-bite as the drink had such a reputation

There's also a Mickey Mouse (mixed) which was bitter and larger I think  :?

a lot of places legally cant sell u a pint of snakebite as they cannot guarrenttee the alcoholic content (thats what Yates's told me when i worked there)

But you are perfectly within your rights to be sold the sepperate ingrediants and mix it yourself   empty pint glass please!

There's never been a legal reason not to sell snakebite - how can a pub guarantee the exact alcohol content of the unmeasured drinks they sell e.g. bacardi & coke, shandy, wine & soda?

Many pubs and bars won't sell it because of its reputation for sending folks loopy, I think this is probably more due to the fact folks have about a dozen of them ;) probably on top of a few lagers.

We'll sell snakebite if asked, but whether you're drinking champagne or snakebite our customers here know that get out of order and the Landlord (me) has the dubious honour of chucking you out of the front door. Only happened four times in four years, I'm quite proud of that fact. After all pubs are meant to be enjoyed, and within reason I let my customers do just that.

I think its because you cannot poor an exact "half and half" of strowbow and carling, and they have different %s, and as people normally slosh in the blackcurrent you dont know how much space there is for the booze.

anyway! SnakeyB is the best drink in the world

Big fan of diesel (snakebite & black)

A while back I got fed up and tried an un-scientific test on the many local pubs who wouldn't serve it. Simply asking why not...

Best one was the alcohol content one. Pure crap. One barman claimed that because the lager he used was 4% and the cider was 4% it made it 8% so he couldn't serve it. Bless him... (assistant manager of a Wetherspoons pub lol)

Another excuse is the 'gets yer wrecked' one. That somehow by mixing the two it will become more potent. Hmmm. To be drunk requires you take in more alcohol than your body can get rid of over time. Simply put the more alcohol in less time gets yer newted. So this theory doesn't really stack up unless you drink it quicker (presuming the lager and cider are the same % volume) Next...

Now this one made the most sense and I believe is the original root and real cause...
As mentioned - It makes the drink cloudy. The last thing any landlord wants is his patrons walking around with glasses that look like cloudy lager. Now this makes sense in a traditional pub where men are men etc but not in a town centre alco-pop den.

What's really annoying is how anyone can confuse a ruby red pint of diesel with a cloudy lager looking snakebite!!

Maybe we should each go to a pub over the next few days and take down excuses as to why they won't serve either snakebite or diesel. We need to get to the bottom of it for society's sake!

only way to drink snakebite is real farmhouse scrumpy (propper wobbly juice) and stella.

then put in a shot of blackcurrent (cordial NOT squash)

THIS WILL MAKE YOU DRUNK

I could drink about 4 pints before it was goodnight time 5 and I would wake up in the bathroom with my head resting on toilet bowl

Snake bite can be sold under discressoion from the landlord... me personally i wont sell it... if you wanna mix it yourself then thats your choice.

alcohol content of barcardi and coke is 37.5% cokes non alcoholic so therefore 37.5% of the drink is still alcohol....

Shandy.. only when poored as a half pint can be charged at what ever you feel nessary as there is no legal mesurment for each... where as a pint of the stuff would be half pint of lemonade plus half pint of lager so in My case it be 2.25 where as a pint of lager is 2.45 ne way!

the cola and OJ is also known as themes water

Guiness and Cider is poor mans black velvet, proper black velvet is with champagne.

but then you also dont have to give a reason for refusing to serve some one.
