help please RE ebay and pay pal..
« on: June 21, 2006, 19:33:26 »
Ok the guy who won the 109 has asked for my paypal details, and wants to pay asap as he is suposed to have arranged to collect next week and ship the week after..
read this and see what you think!

Neil- Howdy! Glad to have won the Landy! Was wondering if would be
alright to pay with Paypal- I have a GBP balance of several hundred
pounds (which hga, and can fund the rest from my $ account.   I have a
guy to pick it up, he is actually right in Brierly Hill, and is
charging
me 100 pounds to get it to the docks in Liverpool.   Can I give you 509
pounds (plus a bit for the aggravation?), and have you pay him in cash
when he turns up?  Seems like a nice chap.  I will fwd. you his local
number, have it in the office, but am on the road at the moment, on the
way to see Bruce Springsteen over in (New) Jersey.

By the way, I have been exporting Rovers to the states for over 12
years, and have plenty of references over there if you are a bit leery,
all the big Rover places know me, i.e. John Craddock, Alan and Glen at
Paddock Spares, so if you want to make sure eveything is on the up and
up, don't hesitate to call either one.

Looking forward to getting the Rover, I have made tentative
arrangements
for it to be picked up on Friday.   Let me know, and I will call a bit
after 6 tomorrow eve.

Cheers!

make the call to paddock or craddocks and see what they have to say,but other than that as long as he checks out ok the deal seems good to me. His paypal idea saves him on charges and other stuff if he only makes one payment to you and you then forward the £100 to his courier.

It's worth checking with Craddocks & Paddocks. I'd be concerned about him paying you to pay the collection guy - he should sort that out direct so there is no come back on you.

If you are really concerned ask ebay for their advise they are really helpful when you have problems

My first reaction to that would be that it MIGHT be a bit dodgy......

The pesamist in me says he will pay you with dodgy money via paypal, get you to pay £500 cash to a stranger and give him the keys to your beloved motor...... he drives off then the credit bounces/fails, you are out of pocket by not only 1 landie, but £500 cash too....

But it might be OK......

Just be very careful.

Bezza..... open a paypal account.... its free and simple to do.

No way would i pass on my bank details to anyone, get him to send you a cheque.

Be careful Bezza, heard many stories of uk folk being stung by foreign buyers.

I really think you should contact ebay & get their opinion.

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/safetycentre/index.html

You can transfer money as soon as it is paid but it takes about 5 days to get to your bank account

Have to agree wi blackbob....... I would only accept cash. I seem to think that if you take a cheque then he can possibly claim it back up to 6 months down the line, same with paypal and also a direct wire transfer I think. Did you have any other bidders? Reason I ask is I would be tempted to offer it to the next highest bidder as this definately sounds dodgey to me.

Check out his website at skytoprover.com - I think he is genuine enough but you are right to be wary
He has bid on several landies recently - a 110V8 ending on 30/05/06 and he stopped bidding at £1700
Also a stage 1 V8 ending on 29/05/06 - although the highest bidder the reserve was not met
Personally I would take the wire transfer - giving out your account no. and sort code is no more than what info is on any cheques you write
Unless you have a trackable means of postage (!) then anyone can do a chargeback on paypal and they ALWAYS come down on the side of the buyer, you should NEVER accept payment this way for any motor unless you really trust the guy
Good luck !

go open a bank account somewhere...get it wired into there, withdraw the cash and close the account ;)

that way you cant lose out and they can never claim the money back out of the account cos it doesnt exist

just a thought....

Personally, I'd ask for payment by banker's draft, and not allow collection until it's cleared and you've withdrawn the cash from the account!! That name "Gabor S. Antalics"  looks HIGHLY dodgy to me!!
Although a google on his name comes up with this: http://www.skytoprover.com/roverfreedom.htm
So maybe he is genuine; don't blame you for being sus tho!!

This sounds lik a failry common variation of thge classic scam. He pays you, youpay collector and his cheque/payment bounces.

DONT accept it, tell him to sort out a draft/transfer. Explain to him what he is proposing is too similar to a common form of Ebay fraud and you're sorry but ths is the way it has to be done.

If he's genuine he will understand.

Get references anyway.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

If he is genuine....... he's gonna make a few grand on your landy, apparently mine (96-P reg) before it was modded is worth between $19-$28k over there, depending on condition.

Sounds like a scam to me.  I accepted Paypal payment for a Saab a couple of years ago.  The buyer paid, then came to collect, two weeks later complained to paypal - it took me three monthys to sort out and get the money.  Never again!  Ok it was only £1500, but as has been said, Paypal 99% of the time side with the buyer.

And no way would I pay his shipping agent - thats one of the longest running scams on Ebay.

I'd get him to pay the agent, and then the agent can pay you cash on collection.  That shouldn't be a problem if the agent is his regular one.

agreed! sounds dodgy!

someone tried to do the same thing with a mobile fone i was selling, and asked me to ship it to his father in nigeria, even sent me loads of fake "post office" emails claiming he had sent me a postal order and arranged a delivery number for me to send the mobile with...

reported to ebay, they took one look and blocked him and refunded my listing fee  :D  DODGY!

out of intrest is the buyer the one who has paid or his "agent"
What are there feedback scores like?
Have they only just registered with ebay in last few months or have they been inactive for some time (item numbers will be greyed out if items are over 6(?) months old in feedback pages)

I had similar type of things prev when I sold my 90 and before that when I sold a car on ebay had emails from an potential bidder in india with an "agent" in uk wanted to pay via cheque/international money order.
Told them that it was fine providing (1) they sort shipping (2)Nothing would be released/signed untill funds where in my bank account(3)would not meet anywhere but at my home address to hand vechicle over.

I really wasnt supprised when they never bothered to bid.

Dont let it put you off they may well be a genuine overseas bidder after your motor but from past expeariance I wouldnt bother selling a vechicle outside of UK

Once he has sent the payment in your paypal it will change to cleared status, indicating valid and accepted funds, any other status and you shouldnt let the goods go. You will also have his paypal rating (similar to eblags) especially if he is a verified paypal user, more guarentee.

Also if in doubt as soon as the money arrives in your paypal withdraw it to your bank account and get him to wait the 5 days for it to arrive in real cash then.
