transfer box leaking info needed plz
« on: June 22, 2006, 20:22:28 »
Hi
I have an oil leak from the rear prop oil seal on my transfer box on my disco 200tdi

I was wondering if I should change the bearing while I was in there?

If so what is the best way to get the old bearing out.is it a pig to get out?

i am hoping to try and do this with the transfer box still on the car. is ths even possible?

Any advice would be appreciated: D

Not sure how difficult it is to get out but I would say that if the bearing aint showing signs of wear... I'd leave it. Not that I'm an expert you understand!

I saw a piccy recently of a home made slide hammer... basically a legth of steel rod that locates in the bearing... with a weight round the handle. Slide the weight up the handle to rear of vehicle... and bob is yer auntie.... allegedly!

Not sure if my info has helped... but good luck anyway.

Kindest

Congratulations!

Always a relief when the problem is fixed and there are no extra bits left over!

... you don't have any bits left over do you....?!

when i went in to land rover main dealer it took 3 attempts to get the right seal as they dont seem to be too good at putting things in the right bins

glad i have a parts book to keep a check on them from now on

RR SPort... or Disco 3... you'dve got free coffee... biscuits... newspaper... slippers.... yer choice of dusky maiden!

Find yer best local NON Dealer garage for the best results. Oh... and put yer location in yer profile.... helps peaople offer assistance.

Thing is with Rimmers, if they say it's in the post, it's in the post.  They have NEVER let me down so when the job needs doing, I pay gladly.  If it can wait, I shop around.

One supplier has now posted me 2 sets of instructions/setup CD for something and both sets have been lost in the post.  Thats' why it's £2 postage from Rimmer's.

Then agin the top 2 drawers of my tool bax are full of seals and gaskets
