Expensive noises

OK, last late night there was this loud reasonably high pitched humming noise coming from the transmission when I parked up, even while in Neutral.  Made me think about contacting the garage the next day.

Unfortunately, next day I had a 30 mile round trip to do early in the morning, and when I got home there was this occasional low rumbling noise that sounded like cogs, again whether in neutral or not.

Straight on the phone to the local garage, had to drive it there, so took it steady, although the cog noise seems fairly constant when I got there.

I've had no other indications, even smells, of a problem becoming evident on the lead up to this, anybody got any idea what it might be?

76k 1996 Discovery 300 V8i Auto, with Autogas conversion since 1999.

Sounds bloody expensive anyway.

Well that was weird...the vibration was definately coming from underneath, and the mechanics were also baffled for a while, seems the noise seemed to eminate from the bell housing of the autobox to them, yet they found the fault was a failed alternator...

Still...cheaper than I thought  :?
