The "Snatch" Land Rovers were never meant for this kind of work, but we insist on putting our troops in them while American troops are safe 'n' sound in RG31's.

Both British built as well.

well its about time they did something but we will still get crap kit!!!! the thing that annoys me most is when u work with americans there body armour is really good when i wear my issue one all i have are two plates front and rear and ther only about 10"wide by 20" long where as the yanks have a full plate front and rear   i feel so save when wearing it........ as for the landys yes they are not upto the job for patroling   and are cramped when fully loaded its about time they gave us proper kit not half measures like stop gaps like we have. Instead of trying to make evertything are selfs why dont they just buy it of the shelf e. from the yanks   then we would get it quicker   sorry rant over

Maybe its time for Land Rover to re-invent the Forward Control as a British Hummer type of motor?
Now that would be cool

They could buy something American I suppose.

But instead they seem to have opted to spend £85,000,000 refubishing some 40 year old FV430's instead.

85million on bodging very old vehicles to make them half decent, what a waste of money..AGAIN!

Just like the crappy SA80, which should have been melted down and forgotten about, but no, lets spend hundreds of millions modifying them and then realise they are still crap, should have bought american M16's or somthing from H&K in Germany.

Our armed forces are a joke, they are run by a bynch of jumped up monkeys, the kit is crap, theres not enough of it and then the government goes and throws good money after bad on more crap instead of buying in good stuff to start with.

In fact the whole government is a bloody joke, but thats another thread altogether.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about everything, mine is the forces are a joke - that is not a personal insult at you or any other person in the serving military but as a whole its a bloody shambles.

Our forces are badly equipped and are told what to do by a government who couldnt organise a pissup in a brewery, needless to say we are puppets to the great old USofA's power mad maniac bush and simply follow like a flaming puppy on a lead into conflict after conflict where we really shouldnt be.

Yes i have used an SA80, am i in the forces...no, i did it as an engineering project where we scrutinised the design and flaws of several guns, mainly the SA80 and MP5. Whilst the L85A2 might be better, the L85A1 was pretty crap by all accounts and the money would have been better spent else where than re-manufacturing them all at great expense.

I'm also not sure that H&K are BAE owned, this hasnt been the case since 2002, when Royal Ordinance sold out to a consortium of one British and two German investors. So not very british, still very german and of course there is a massive US side to H&K too.

Just to add my penys worth to the debate i have used both the sa80 and the mi6 both in peace time and in anger and the sa80 worked first time everytime and the m16 just kept jamming. I have never had any problems with the sa80 but i am always one to make sure it is clean and well oiled. But at the end of the day remember it is only designed to wound not kill. unlike the good old slr now that gun would upset your day if you were on the wrong end if it (and your shoulder if you were at the blunt end of it)

Agree with the slr there, that is one weapon that would give someone a bad day, and also a couple of others behind them.

But if you want a bad shoulder and long range cant beat the Lee-enfield bolt action, 1200yds range on the sights, and capable in the right hands to hit the  target at that range.

But as far as the vehicles are concerned, they could do a lot worse by ressurecting some of the old humber pigs they used in Ireland (or even Saracens   ), mind you it would be like an oven out there. But they do need some kind of protection they must be able to retro-fit some kind of composit plastic armour, the landys used in Ireland had a covering called makralon or something similar as I remember, they weren't able to stop an rpg but would be resistant more than aluminium and canvas against shrapnel and some small arms fire

Now thats a scary thought the humbers were not the best at stopping either  .  Now they could bring fox back i used to driver / gun one and they were so qiute you could sneck up on anybody plus got a bit of armour on them and dam fast on the road plus a nice gpmg co axial mounted and one on the commanders capolour as well, oh and not forgting a nice semi auto 30mm cannon to upset the locals with

Those foxes did die an early death really, but yes they need something, even a 432 would be better than ally

btw a pig does not have to stop, and they make short work of the old black taxis when they were used as road blocks too

Coudl do with the yanks doing some lend lease again

At least its not blue on blue now
