« on: June 29, 2006, 15:43:38 »
:D  i find myself with the possiblity of buying a td5 at last so i thought id ask a few questions to get some feedback about them as it was the first time ive ever been in one yesterday

What kinda mileage would i get out of td5  compared to my old 300tdi?
is there anything i should look out in particular ??

im looking into buying a X reg Td5 GS its a little more than i paid for my 300tdi less then 2 years ago so i am a little scepticle (if thats spelt right)
took it for a test drive all is lovley no dodgy noises and the air seems to be fine spotless inside and out.

just would be nice to have some opionions plz

Usual things to look for:

Head gasket - what's the mileage ?. If the gasket has been done, was it replaced before the head got trashed ?. Check for small bubbles of air in the expansion tank - the gasket can go between one of the cylinders and a waterway, so you don't get any mayo, the compression just forces the water out ! (mine would ony blow water when driven over 70mph !)

GS spec may have ACE - check that the hydraulic pipes were replaced under the recall prog.

Same applies to SLS (self-levelling suspension, normally only on 7 seaters) - does it work ?, does one side sag after a while ?

Flywheel - some of the early ones have been known to self-destruct, should have been replaced a long time ago under a recall.

ABS pump (pasenger side of engine bay) - should have two round metal discs screwed on top with allen bolts, again, done under recall.

Check all the electrics, will probably only have 2 manual sunroofs though.

Steering box seals can let go, don't think you can replace the seals - so new/recon box needed.

Any other q's, please ask.

Besides the salient points mentioned above, you obviously off-road your Tdi, and an X-reg may or may not have the 'spigot' in the transfer box to enable use of the diff lock (it was deleted from the spec at some point around 2000/2001 ... my 2000 model has it), so check this before purchase. And no matter what Land Rover try to say, the ETC ain't no susbstitute for a proper diff lock. Mind you, it's awesome when used in conjunction with the CDL ...

An auto will drink (mine does!) when compared to a Tdi, but the manual is acceptable (reckon on 27-29 mpg from a manual under normal useage). The auto's superb off-road, though, especially with the 'manual' option in use.

Apart from that, the normal Disco checks apply to the D2 just as much as the D1.

When I test drove a few I found some had noisy ACE pumps.  It's a whistle which changes in pitch with the engine revs (not the turbo!)  Should be audible but not loud.

XS is a nice spec though.  I'd have liked one but just missed a bargain and could only find a GS.
