brakes help needed
« on: July 04, 2006, 10:12:21 »
i need to replace the front brake pipes on my 85 RRC....and also the rear brakes dont work at all....cause unidentified..i was going to start by replacing the calipers.

is there anyone local (west mids) who would be able to show/help me do the brake pipes, and swap the rear calipers, and possibly replace the rear pipes as well. it failed the MoT on corroded front brake pipes, so i guess its the rigid bit.

im in wolverhampton (wv6) or if needs be i can bring it with me (still got a large borrowed trailer in my possession   ) .... but i would be very grateful if anyone can help :)

cheers

James

No experience on RR's but in general, replacing brake pipes are relatively easy to do. You'll need a roll of brake pipe (copper is best) which is cheap, a brake pipe flaring tool (machine mart ones are ok) and the correct ends (some are male and some are female. I cut the pipes at either end and remove, this means you can run the copper alongside it to get the correct length. Put the ends on (put them on BEFORE flaring!!) flare the pipe and then rerun the pipe along the route, taking care not bend it too sharply. Then unscrew the old ends and reattach the new. Obviously you will need to bleed the system. Take a good luck at the route the pipe takes as there are often joins or flexi's along the way so remember to get enough of the correct ends and put them on before flaring the pipe. PS a brake pipe spanner can come in handy too!

Edit - I used this one here. Excellent on copper but poor on steel. http://www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=040212935

I'd suggest you start by buying a ready made kit from someone like Craddocks (automec, copper alloy) for about £70 for a classic with dual circuit brakes.  Each pipe ready made, marked to avoid confusion etc.  Get a set of flexis at the same time, Goodrige are about £70 for the same car, any length.  Callipers about £60 from Paddocks, new not recon, then you have a near new system, just make sure you replace things one at a time to avoid cock-ups and if you get a Haynes book of confusion they actually help a little (stops your tea going cold on the stone step  ), no seriously, it's not a bad book.
