Well I've surprised even myself :shock:

Over the past week, I've done a fair mixture of running about, school-runs, city-centre, motorways, green-lanes, pottering around the foothills of the Pennines, fast country A-roads (Stump Cross, via Pateley Bridge  to Ripley, for one)

Topped up yesterday at ASDA after nipping in for a few items & only 95.9p/litre

212.4miles
27.35 litres
When converted gives= 6.017 gallons

MPG = 35.29  =D>


My usual averages vary betwen 30 & 32, so that's not a bad figure, I don't suppose?

mmmmmmmmmmmm get about 28mpg from our TD5 110 with O/D. does normally have 2 adults and three children in it though :)

Just topped up again, well the second time since the initial posting.

I got a 32MPG on the last one

Just called again on way back from builders merchants

170.4miles
21.91litres = 4.820gallons
35.35MPG

I'm happy with that (again)  \:D/

We've been getting 32 out of the TD, not bad going for a 17y old engine with a small fuel leak.

By my calculations on 2 journeys now i have exceeded 40mpg, doing 55mph on a 250mile motorway/A-road trip towing a small trailer (hence only doing 55 constant speed).

Great economy however its so dam boring, the advantage is at 55 its nice and quiet and comfortable to have the windows open as well as sunroof on a hot day :)

mine returns that same at that sort of speed.....55-60. last year i went all the way to scotland and the disco returned 40 mpg......... 8)  8)  8)  8)

On a run it will probably do 30 I spose

35" tyres dont help

to get 30 odd all the time I would have to drive like a wuss!

22mpg ish on a long motorway run.. 200tdi, old diesel xfer box, 32" tyres, external roll cage lots of sticky out less aerodynamic bits etc etc

Seriously looking at doing a twin tank veg conversion, just have to get my head around C&E duty (I want to be legal)

:( normal running about and i get 22mpg on a run about 28mpg running about on holiday in scarborough she did 26mpg all the time p.s at 80mph shes doing 2700rpm in fifth overdrive and thats gps 80 :D

thinking of startnig a webpage on the oil thing..

basically I need a kit (around £500) plus fill in some forms then to find somewhere that sells enough veg oil (cant be arsed with recycled).

I will phone HMCE sometime this week and let you know.

Zero the trip-odometer next time you fill up

Then on the next fill/top-up, you need to make a note of  the mileage covered & the fuel that you pour into the tank
(it'll only be in litres, as it's illegal to sell in gallons :evil: )


Divide the litres by 4.545 to give you the gallons
Divide the gallons into the miles covered to give MPG

Example from a (top-up) receipt I have to hand;
20.77 Litres
(divide by 4.545)
4.569 gallons
Miles covered were 156.1

Giving 34.16MPG

It only works out properly from a full (brimmed) tank & zeroed at the same time.

Ok have done two refills on the Td5 now and the first time was with thrashing it up and down motorways and we got 27mpg the second time was going to and from my clients houses (usually round 3 or 4 mile trips ) and also a day trip greenlaning in the dales and again I got 27mpg. Not the best mpg but not bad :D So when I actually get used to her and start driving her properly I may do even better :wink:

Right the only true way to do it is to run ya landy out of fuel ( YES I KNOW ) then top it up to the hilt (FULL). Then hit ya trip counter to Zero. Then run it out of fuel again. Work it out from the Fuel you put in and the Miles you have done. What alot of ppl do is fill it up and run it to empty on the fuel guage then work it out. This way you are not getting all of the fuel you put in. A landy may run for another 30 to 50 miles on empty. So when you say you are getting 23mpg you are more than likley to be getting alot more. I have changed to proper Bio Diesel now from the pump at 88p a liter and my landy is alot better. I am getting about and extra 7mpg.

Not the only way :roll:  :roll: This is the way most people do mpg calcs and it's correct.

No matter what fuel in the tank you fill it up. Reset the trip.

Drive a while :wink: Re-fuel it up to the top. Make a note of how many litres you put in. Divide the number of miles by number of litres to give miles per litre. Then mutliply by 4.54. You then have mpg.

Problem with this is the odometre being out by a %. Way to get around this is to calibrate your odometre with a GPS which is more accurate and use this factor on your miles before doing the above.

I have only a vague idea of what the LSE does becuase LPG varies so much in volume.  Sometimes I can do 115 miles for about £10, another time it costs twice that :( .
