I was browsing through some of my old copies of 'Street Machine' & 'Custom' Car' on Tuesday as the bro-in-law is selling his Samurai (see 'For sale' forum) and has had his eye taken by a Model A hot-rod that he's seen somewhere.

So I delved into my back-issues to scout out some pics for him, they're from the days when 'Street Machine' still had proper cars in, not tarted up Novas & Saxos etc....

In the June 1986 issue I found this rendition of a Range Rover, I'd forgotten about it.
It's an interesting idea, be nice done.
The text reads;

'The red car is a radical animal, being basically an off-road sports car. The styling has a slight sixties nostalgia feel, with its faired-in cockpit & tapered pods behind the seats.
Potentially a very exiting & unusual fun-car'

So, how about it someone?? :D

Ah yes. Street Machine when it used to have proper cars. I like the idea of the RR coupe, espeically since I've seen a 3.5V8 in the Auto Trader for £250!!!

Now how do I pursuade SWMBO? Any ideas?....

On the same theme (SM mag) have you been watching American Hotrod on Men&Motors? All set in Boyd Coddingtons workshop. Nice cars and a very good place to pick up styling ideas and technical know-how.

Just been looking on Auto Trader for pictures of RRs to compair against the artists impression above. He's obviously used a 2dr RR as the basis for the sketch given the distance between the rear edge of the door and the front wheel arch.

Am I right in thinking that the doors on 2dr RRs were bigger than those on the 5dr RR?

Help.....must spend money and get grinder from garage.......

It's a nice concept isn't it :D  T
he artist used to do a different car everymonth, there was once a gorgeous Volvo 'Amazon'(B122) that had a chop & looked for all the world like a '49 Mercury (as seen in 'American Graffiti' drive by The Pharoahs) and a hi-rise' street racer version with a tube front axle. 'Sigh' those were the days :D  

Same idea might work with a 3-door Disco, but the tail-gate would be more problematic than a Rangie's

Just need to figure out how to turn the lower tail gate into a salloon type boot lid by using part of the roof as it has the correct compound curve, then using the rest of the roof as the rear decking over the rear seats...

As it's simply an 'Artists Impression', the artist probably used his licence :D
Perhaps chopping the seat base down & lowering the steering column would help

It is, but it's not the same. Last time I looked at it, it was more like 'Max-Power' (any relation to Austin??? :D )

There's still plenty of nice motors out there, be they American or British.

Try 'Classic American', that's still got some decent vehicles in.

This guy might not be to your taste musically, but he did a lot of car songs (covered, or wrote) such as;

He's the guy who played that phenomenal (7minute?) guitar solo on the early '70's single by Love Sculpture; 'Sabre Dance'
