Over the last five years, registrations of some of the most polluting cars on the road -- 4x4s -- have risen by more than 40 percent, according to the SMMT, against an overall rise of vehicle registrations of 10 percent.

Anybody want to bet that rise includes the rally type 4x4 vehicles such as the imprezza etc, and the performance executive motors such as the Audi RS4 etc to help load the figures up?

Perhaps the writer should have a read of the official Government emission figures for all vehicles.

Theres no point describing a Nissan X-trail 4x4 as "One of the most polluting car on the road" when it has exactly the same CO2 emissions as a Bmw 320i.

Here you go
http://www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/search/vedSearch.asp

Select "Band - G Petrol" Then choose all and hey presto the Beemer and a 4x4 sitting next to each other.

I could probably pull out other examples but the first one gets the point across.

Then of course you might want to think about the end of life cost of these new vehicles.
When a traditional car gets scrapped the vultures pull bits off, the tyres get removed and the whole lot goes in a giant shredder to get melted down and used again.
A hybrid power vehicle has LOTS of nasty chemicals in its batteries.  Lets see what kind of sour face the tree huggers pull when that lot starts piling up needing a disposal method.
Watch out theres a tigger about!

This article from the SMMT:

Ken Livingstone, mayor of London has asked Transport for London to examine proposals to change the city’s current congestion charge.   He wants to encourage motorists to switch the cleaner vehicles by imposing a £25 daily entry fee for the most heavily polluting cars and is clearly taking a swipe at 4x4s.   Christopher Macgowan, chief executive at the SMMT recent condemned the ‘politics of envy’ that seem to underlie often misleading comments about urban 4x4s.

Just sent them a nice little letter nothing nasty just pointing out the the electric cars need recharging and were do you get the power to do that so more work for the power stations so they kick out more pollution and advised them on there out of date facts about poluiting 4x4 and pointed them to a few cars that are more poluting.
getting fed up of the mis reporting the news companys do about 4x4 wish someone would ask them to prove there facts.
my little rant over (for now)

Looks like they ignored the complaint or the articles are automatically generated.  Any mention of car emissions seems to include a stock phrase for 4x4's

Statistics show average CO2 emissions from all new cars have dropped by 11 percent in six years, although registrations of some of the most polluting cars on the road -- 4x4s -- have risen by more than 40 percent, against an overall rise of vehicle registrations of 10 percent.

UK carmakers have cut energy use and CO2 emissions by half over the last four years in addition to making the vehicles themselves more environmentally friendly, according to an industry body on Monday.

Is this not evidence that 4x4's have greatly contributed to lowering emmissions

Exactly right, that man. The highest level of CO2 reduction in passenger vehicles over the past three years or so, has been in the SUV market sector.

cheers
