I thought a topic on interesting things found on Google earth might be a good Idea

I 'll start with:

If you zoom in on the devils punchbowl (hindhead) there is a plane flying over it.

....next ?

My Audi is in three places at once, outside here, my flat in Brighton and at the Express store I used to run :)

Now THIS took some planning

http://www.evilgoat.org/~rich/junk/LUECKE.kmz

Link will only work if you have Google earth installed. You Might have to unzip it first.

If you want to share a location, click save-as once you are looking at it, then save the KMZ someplace on the net.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Hi Jeff

As far as I can remember I typed Google Earth on Google, downloaded it and installed it, also I think you have to have a half decent graphics card for it to work at its full potential.
Is rather good though :)

The images were taken about 4/5 years ago as part of the millenium project.
Apparently they are updating them soon to include more detail and a larger area in detail !

If you look at Prestwick Airport you'll find three Lockheed C-5 Galaxy aircraft on the runways, it's thought that the photo was taken during the G8 summit at Gleneagles and these brought over all the security, helicopters and vehicles for Bush.

My favorite bit is the blackouts:
Look in California and you can get good detail of Edwards Air Force BAse, including planes on the Apron.
Now go to Nevada and look at Las Vegas; all the casino's are blanked out.

Where is the sense in that? You can look at Military stuff but not the outside of a Casino?

Are you sure thats not just shadows cast by the buildings - I can see them fine
My home town (Dunoon) and surrounding area has just gone high res in the last few weeks

It's certainly not shadows; when I zoom right in on the strip each of the casino's just has a white square over it the general shape of the building.
Wierd; maybe I have an early version.

Sounds like you've got the "3D Buildings" feature switched on. Should be a check box on lower LHS of screen to switch it off.

I agree with Wolfie, check to see if you have got 3D buildings turned on as my version seems fine with good high res pics of The Strip including all buildings.
With 3D buildings you can tilt the landscape and see those casinos as they really are!

Can I suggest that you also try http://worldwind.arc.nasa.gov/
Not as good coverage of photos of the UK but of the States its OK but has other good features e.g. superimpose real time weather data onto the UK. Beware needs a Broadband connection!

How about this at Heathrow... four shots of the same aircraft landing on 09North.
