transfer box help please

I have a 88 5speed man rangie and the front prop flange has side ways play. Figured its the bearings ?
Dont know much about transferboxes so I'm after some pointers please.
I have disconnected the prop undone links and managed to undo all bolts and nut on the casing( a few cuts to prove it). But separated about 2" and theres a rod at the top stopping me withdraw the unit I think it a selector
but cant see where and how to disconnect it.
Any help would be greatfull.
my wife doesn't like it dirty good job i have a landrover.

I think i may have to replace my transfer box, can it be done in situ and what are the steps to replacing it?

It's a 5 speed manual 84 range rover classic

it can be done,


both props off

disconnect handbrake cable from lever

disconnect difflock lever

support transmission

it may pay to remove exhaust centre section

remove crossmember

remove all the bolt joining the transfer box to gearbox (its bolted in both directions. ie some will have to be removed from the front (the really inaccessible ones)




remove transfer box, very heavy!

to refit read upwards :)

been a long time since i did it, and a 4post lift and air tools make the job much much easier, but it can be done on the floor

I replaced mine last week (see NO DRIVE post) 1991 3.9 Vogue SE A

Remove viscous fan and cowl

Remove both prop shafts and center section of exhaust (the Y part) and remove rear sections from hangers as they need to be pushed out of way

Take out tunnel cosmetics from inside disconnect handbrake, gear stick and High Low stick

Remove cross member (large hammer and crowbar may be needed or bottle jack and pieces of wood to spread chassis rails)

Remove 1 gearbox mountings and 1 transfer unit mounting from chassis supporting gearbox with jack

Remove speedo drive and handbrake support

Drop gearbox support jack till back of transfer box clears rear foot well approx 4 inches

Remove 6 bolts from tfer/gearbox face

separate tfer and gbox

1 man can remove I dropped mine onto caravan step and used 2 trolley jacks 1 for gbox support and 1 under tfer box


Putting back in however is a 2 (strong) men job due to angles etc and be VERY careful when locating gearbox shaft into transfer box NOT to touch the oil seal in the tfer box.

Can be done in situ on the drive with ramps under front wheels (rear wheels chocked) and 2 trolley jacks and a caravan step ( or a beer bottle crate)
