Range Rover P38 . Engine a bit flat

Hi , Colin here from yorkshire.

Just got a 96 RR P38 BMW 2.5 DT, with 120,000 miles RUNS OK, Had loads of overheating probs but a new radiator and new v fan sorted this out ( old radiator full of rad weld , and viscus fan .. well it dint viscus). Now the engine is hard to start when hot  and the engine is a bit slow, now i read that they are a bit on the slow side but this to me seems very slow.

Just wondering if anyone has any pointers on this.

Hard to start when hot? do a compression test! overheating may have caused excessive wear.

Have done compression test and all is ok, mate at garage said it could be the temp sensor has anyone ever come across this as i read that a lot of p38 DTs have this prob. The motor runs as sweet as a nut with no smoke and not two bad on fuel

doubt it helps but we have a 2.5DSE P38 in at work at the moment......takes about 15 secs on the starter to actually fire (when cold)...ive been told the head gasket has gone.
clouds of smoke as well
