Colway A/T Tyres
« on: August 14, 2006, 14:05:19 »
Think Moneypit is going to need new boots before she goes for her MOT in October.

Want to get some A/T and was heavily leaning towards BFG, but can't find the size for my wheels and can't afford new wheels.

Currently have 255/55 R18 wheels with the original Wrangler tyres and have found that Colway do an A/T for this wheel, 255/55 R18 109Q, which I have found for £48 each from Sowden Tyres in Leeds, not sure what fitting, balancing etc will cost.

Not knowing much about the technical aspects of tyres I have some questions/concerns:

1.   Will this tyre be the same size as the existing wranglers?  herefore won't have to do anything drastic like cut the wheel arches.
2.   Anyone know of horror stories/reasons not to get them/use this supplier?
3.   Anyone use these tyres?  Just how good are they

I tend to drive no faster than about 60/65 on Motorways and use Moneypit to pull a caravan, having been off road just once but intend to do a bit more over time, nothing serious, until I can put some protection in place and afford the repairs.

Any advice/coments and opinions gratefully received.

Cheers

I used Colway A/T 235/70x16 on the Discovery for almost 35,000miles with no issues at all.
They're obviously not going to last as long as as a 'new' tyre' (the BFG A/T's on my 110 measure up at half-worn, compared to a new spare & that's at 50,000miles)

I found them a well-mannered tyres & capable of most things asked of them, so long as you're not too silly; on, or off, tarmac

The size should equate to (give or take a few millimetres) a standard 235/70x16 tyre, as the aspect of the sidewall is lower on the 18"

With comments like;

I'd guess at a Discovery 2, or a P38??

Sorry Guys

BTM is correct, Moneypit is a 2001 D2 TD5 XS.

Named because I seem to spend most of my cash keeping her on the road, a small Mazda at the last count, but I have the belief that one day she will be perfect, well at least most of her will work.

With the comment re 18" wheels I had a feeling it was something along those lines
Purely my own thoughts... I was reasonably happy to run my Disco on Colway AT's - had them on for about 18months before I upgraded to BFG AT's (swapped as they were a bargain off ebay and 245/75's compared to the 235/70's I was running).

However, there was always the nagging doubt with regards to the old remould debate in the back of my mind. Saying that, I've had more problems with 'proper' tyres than the Colways.

Cost is an argument, but if a Colway does 25k miles at 50quid a pop and a BFG does 50k miles at 100quid a pop what is the difference? Other than the BFG's are a first generation tyre.

Personally I would be happy with a remould tyre on a weekend plaything but everyday transport doing lots of miles I'm far far happier on the BFG's.

Can...worms...open...

The Colway AT is an exellent tyre on/off road ,have done thousands of miles on them-they do wear quicker than a :new tyre: ,Colway produce tyres for Rally cars -some with twice the BHP than your average 4x4 and have won many championships, not cheap and nasty -but a good retread with a good speed rating, Mark Sowden is a nice guy to do buisness with

One further consideration to this is that if you are planning any serious off roading then the Colway might be a better bet  as a cut in the sidewall for example means a £50 tyre ruined as opposed to £100 down the drain, just something else to consider

I think BFG's do considerably more than 50k miles.  That said i'm after an inexpensive set of at's so i'll be sticking colways on.

General do the AT2 grabber in that size. I use the 16" on my D2 and found them to be as good if not better than the BFG AT's

Im using 235 85 16 Colway mt's on the Beast. They have done approx 20,000 on and off road. I think they are about half worn. If they do 30,000 then i will be very happy indeed. :)
