Early V8 110's
« on: September 03, 2004, 11:23:29 »
Hi all

My 110 is quite an early example and an article in the last LRM about pre-production 110's brought a surprise. The first V8 used in the coilers was number 49. Mine is 122.

However, the VIN number is some 3900 after the start of production. I guess this is because most were diesels.

Still quite nice to find it is so early. Of course, it is kept totally original for historical reasons...... not!

Is there any way to find out is it was supplied as a hard top, soft top or truck cab originally? The VIN number only tells that it was one of these without being specific. It has had a safari rear door fitted from another vehicle, but the tailgate would have been fitted to any of these options.

Unless the rear x-member has been replaced look to see if it has the mounts for a tail gate welded on, thay dident put the mounts on hard top motor's only soft-top / truck cab's.

I think the crossmember has been replaced, but it does have the tailgate mounts. If this is correct for the vehicle, then it confirms my thoughts that it started life as something other than a hard top. It has the hooks all down the side for the tilt, but I wasn't sure if these were fitted to all models.

We have 84 110 csw there are no hooks or tail gate mounts.
The 90 sw has hooks & tail gate mounts this made me think along the same lines as you.
Talking one day to the boss at my local independent Landrover dearler & the guy remembered fetching the 90 from the factory when he first started, He even still had the motor's detail's on file, He got it has a truck cab & supplied the parts to change it to a sw later on.
So i reccon your right it must have had the hard top added later in it's life.
