Help - 300 series Tdi offside rear diff oil leak.

Is this a difficult/expensive repair?

I had my brakes checked out for wear & tear today and discovered that my Offside rear diff has signs of an oil leak, I Think maybe a seal has gone, but that's all I think.

What advice can you give me on it's repair, or what else could it be other than the seal?

How much should I expect a mechanic to charge if I ask a garage to repair it - (This would include replacing the rear brake pads)?

your discripion not very clear is it the diff at the prop or the hub at the wheel
either are easy to repair

It is at the hub of the wheel, the viscosity of the oil/sludge around the caliper is leading me to believe it is the diff, thus saturating the brake pads and rendering them useless.

Also when turning corners at any speed, it sounds like i'm driving through an american parking lot, with the squeals embellishing each turn I make.

Could the squeal be from the PAS belt? I can't imagine it's related to tyhe oil leak.

Fixing the oil leak should be easy if that's any comfort. Or indeed cheap if given to a garage. That's would be either just a seal or bearings plus seal - what would that be 50 quid?

£50 suits me fine.

I'm not sure it is the PAS belt, noise is definately from the wheels/ground.

Then maybe I'm wrong! Or maybe the wheel bearing has gone? I had this once made the odd filthy noise and then would travel at speed OK but it ended up wrecking the bearings!

Is the leaky hub hotter than the others after a run?

I'm now told that it is the bearings that will need replacing, along with oils & Disc pads, total £120 - £150.

Blocked axle breather, forces ep90 into the greased bearings, washing them out then the resultant sludge mix blows past the inner seal and splatters the inside of the disk.
