off road ??

what can i do to help greenlane / off road performance?
bearing in mind its our 'family' car so silly mods are out!

For just greenlaning leave it standard, 110's are very capable out of the box.  :D

Looks fine to me.  As long as you've got some decent recovery points on the front and rear then I'd leave it alone and save your money to spend on fuelling it!

In terms of off road performance the single biggest difference you can make is to change the tyres for more aggressive ones, but I would say that the BFG ATs that you have are an excellent compromise between road use and off road and given that we shouldn't be trashing green lanes when they are really wet then good green laning tyres too.

good recovery points as above and also diff guards, sill guards, a pair of waffles and a Hi-Lift jack.

Ability to jack it up and stick some waffles under wheels will get you out of 99% of laning probs.

Walking boots and a good map! If it looks dodgy or you're uncertain - walk it first.  

A good set of ATs and judicious use of the right foot will see a standard 110 over almost anything.  8)

Ten years of laning and I've never had to winch.

Its the weight of the 110. I have not used a winch green laning for years, mine is not working yet!!

But if you get some where like Allt-y-Badi, I can drive up it in the dry, but in the wet most carnt. Its best to winch as it causes less damage to the ground rather than wheel spinning. Also there are times when the ground looks good and easey to drive, you drive it and sink in a little, rather that trying to get out and wheel spinning its easer to use a winch and a little pull will make life a lot easer.

I know of a lane that has not been driven for about 20 years, if ever, by the look of it. Its not on any of the maps but is on the lost of streets and because of the fact it has not been driven it will need a winch to do it all, but after all the dead leaves and mud has gone off of the surface it will be easley done without a winch. So there are times you mighr need a winch on a green lane. If only to recover you self. Yes I have seen a lane that has been used for years without anyone getting into trouble, then one year it had been snowing and someone hit the breaks a bit hard and slid into a ditch. The only way to get them out was to use a winch.

So you "may" need a winch.

I'll debate that point again. If someone is starting out greenlaning, then they shouldn't be doing the Lane form Hell, or similar things. Therefore when starting out you don't need a winch, and until you're experienced, you shouldn't get one, either.

If you can't drive a lane in the wet, then why do it?  :?  

Like I say, a good set of walking boots will keep you out of most trouble. Most ditches can be got out of with a good recovery rope and good technique.

Sorry to disagree with you, but I don't like seeing folk pushed towards buying stuff they don't need. Half a grand buys a shed-load of diesel.

You can drive it, well I can. If you have ever been up there you would see why. Its a very large step. Going down even in the snow :D  is fine. I have even taken a Freelander down there. But going up takes a bit more. Rather than trying, wheel spining and making lots of nosie its just makes more sence to winch 10 foot over the step and drive the rest.

He was asking what people think he should get. So I said a winch. I think a winch is money well spent, even better than a good set of tyres. But it is a lot of money, not just the winch as you need a mount as well. But its  money well spent when/if you need it.

I've found the best way of recovering without spending £500 on a winch is to get yourself a lovely Tirfor, never ever ever got stuck and not being able to get out of it with one of these!

Even to the point where I wast stuck in a bomb hole with Mud over the sills, dragged me out but also started to drag the 3 land rovers that were tied together!  I would add that this was on an off road site, not a green lane!

watch out for the west mids laning trip and if you get stuck there are enough motors to pull you out  :lol:  id just get a good set of at tyres if greenlanes are all your planning
