diff lock switch

Hi All

My mates 90 (K reg), when he goes into diff lock no light on dash? checked bulb ok, but we do not know where the actual switch is?
He says hes not sure that diff engages-I said to feel for truck to 'stiffen' up apart from that I don't know how else to check with one of these modern fangdangle things...

If you jack up one wheel, it should turn. The third diff will send the drive through the transfer box to the gearbox. The gear clusters will move.

Engage the lock and the third diff will lock the front and rear props, the wheel willl not turn any more.

HI MATE SAME HAS HAPPENED TO ME CHECK THAT IT HASNT SLIPPED OFF IT CONNECTION ON THE GEAR BOX FOUND MINE JUST DANGLING DOWN LIKE IT HAD BEEN PULLED OFF CANT FIND WHERE IT GOES BAC TO THO

my light didnt work...unplugged from dash pluged back and it worke, seems to stop tho in wet conditions  :?

Dif lock switch is located on top gearbox if you take off centre cover you should be able to see it (difficalt to get to though) you can test the switch with a multimeter

Drive the car in a tight circle. You'll know when it's in difflock as the tyres will scrub. You can get at the lever from underneath but, as Richard says, it's easier to get to with the tunnel removed. You'll see the lever down the side of the box. If you're having trouble getting in and out of diff lock then you can adjust the pivot bolt on the linkage arm to get you the required movement at the bottom. Have a play about with the tunnel off and see if the light comes on. On my 90 the light was working but it needed adjusting to get the difflock engaged as merely moving the stick wasn't doing the job. Dead easy when you get down to it if it just needs adjusting. Hardest part is rusty screwheads on the tunnel!

my wire came off aswell, if you remove the centre panel from the seat box, you can get access to reattach the wire, can be a bit fiddley getting the ol fingers in there though, if you sit in the passenger seat, look down the right hand side of the gear box, towards the front, almost directley under the carner of the seat box hole (front left corner of drivers seat) you should see the terminal tucked down in there, maty help to have a torch to lligh the way...

Why are Land Rovers such a pain to work on?? Mine has the old vacuum operated diff lock and one bolt is virtually impossible to get to. You know, half a spanner turn, flip the spanner the other way, another half a flat, etc, etc.

The Zuke is a completey different story. Everything is designed for that car. Not some pile of parts from across the range thrown together  :lol: It only takes 2 or 3 hours to change a clutch. Or I can have the transfer box out within 30 minutes! My Landy would take 3 days and 3 people  :lol: Oh, and lots of blood!

My diff lock switch was intermitant so it was changed when i had to replace the clutch (easy) would not think it was to easy to replace inistu as not easy to find and coverd in mud

I found mine easy enough.  Just follow the two wires leading to it.

Before you take it out, make sure you get rid of all the mud, oil, grease, etc that has acumulated over the years though.

BTW, you need a 16mm long socket to remove the switch (I found my small spark plug socket was a perfect fit) :D
