MPG expectations for TD5 auto

Just brought my fist Disco, 52 plate td5 ES auto. Have just filled it up for the second time. I've calculated the average mpg at 21. I know these things are never going to return great fuel economy but my figures seem miles away from published figures. My real concern is that this mpg could be a symptom of some failure etc or should I just except that I'll be getting to know the garage attendent very well!

I find with my 300tdi auto it all depends on how heavy the right foot is. I know this is pointing out the obvious but what I mean is that if you change gear your self by keeping your foot on the gas until you want to change gear like you would in a manual and then slowly lift off the gas until it goes up a gear and so on and also move the gear lever down to 3rd when you see a big hill etc as I find this helps alot with mpg. about 50miles roughly I get extra from the tank as the engine isnt struggling in a too higher gear etc.
also tyres and towing effects it alot but that is obvious too. Do you have your air con on?

On our TD5 Auto I could manage about 23mpg round town at best, Swmbo with her size 18 & useing sport box only managed to average 17mpg  , she now has a freelander
Hope that helps, but I think they are never going to be as good on fuel as my 200tdi that averages 26mpg & I running 33'' tyres :? ,

With these posted figures for diesels I am so glad I have a V8i on LPG, 11.8mpg around town, 14.5mpg average, and 19.0mpg on a run.
At 80% the efficiency of Unleaded (when running on LPG), and the price difference for each fuel*, that equates to 33.7mpg, 41.5mpg, and 54.3mpg respectively, figures that I'd have to expect from Unleaded for the same money.
(*) - Locally Unleaded 89.9p/l, LPG 39.3p/l

I have just got a manual TD5 E (51-plate) and worked out it was returning 30 -32mpg, but then again I wasn't thrashing it, I was doing a steady 60mph.
But not as good as my 300tdi auto I have just sold, 60mph and got 39mpg

Yes, I must say the 'run' figure I quoted was a constant 60mph down the motorway on cruise control, must be a few of us doing that.
Nice to see figures for diesels being used the same way.
I can't believe the price of LPG in some places, worst I've found is BP locally at 45.9p, especially when you know they are getting it in bulk for less than 25p after tax.
What do the forecourts make per litre for petrol/diesel? 5p a litre? So why do they think it ok to rip us off on LPG with a profit of 20p a litre?
There's this cartel operated by most forecourts that think the price of LPG should always be 50% the price of unleaded, and they move the pricing of LPG to suit, whether or not the price of LPG has changed or not.
Why do we put up with this?
Only way round it is to 'join' a discount fuel reseller, like countrywide, unless you have the space for a 2000 litre sled of your own to bulk buy
Such is life.

I am quite shocked at that I thought the TD5 being newer would be more economical?
My 300TDi dose 32MPG on a run towing the caravan and around town if you keep the revs to about 2000( so the turbo dosent cut in)
If you drive it hard and rev it over 2500/ 3000 it dose 25MPG

Maybe it's the extra cylinder?
