Thinking of breaking the disco - guaging interest! :(
« on: October 15, 2006, 17:30:16 »
Its MOT time tomorrow, I have just been having a look around it and it definately needs a n/s sill and a boot floor.

There are bound to be more holes, I think I will have to get rid. There are too many around now to get any money for it in one piece so I think it might get broken up, I quite fancy a range rover classic anyway ;)

How much should I be looking for for 200tdi engine (130 odd k) running sweet as a nut, recent replacement timing belt.

Anyone broken one recently?  What are the most valuable bits.  Looking on ebay I could be looking at £150 for all the seats, £10 a door mirror etc etc.  Gotta be better than getting £400 for it in one chunk on ebay.

Ah [bollards], these things happen I suppose!

Cheers,

Mike

Dont break her     Please try to get her fixed up or sell her to some one who will??    I can fully understand your financial reasons for this way of thinking, but it always saddens me to see another one ending her days :-({|=

Come on someone make him a sensible offer to save the old girl,  got to be worth someones while doing a wekends welding ??

No need to brake her. i have just spent the last few weekends making new inner wing patches, repairing the boot floor, rebuilding the exhurst, strighting front anti roll bars, removing rear anti roll bars plus loads of other bits to get it ready for the mot and its cheap and easy to do. lot easyer tham scrapping her and having to do the same with another one next year

I already had a list of jobs to do: Discs and pads all round, osf cv joint, nsf swivel seal.  All of which I was happy to do (actually already bought the bits) but I cant weld.  At least I have never tried.

Well I have decided to get it tested and priced if nothing else and then I will take it from there!

A days welding from a pro is a dear job tho isnt it....

Cheers,

Mike

Give a shout out on here for a welder and you are bound to get help. i cant weld to save to save my life but lucky enough with the disco most of the pannels are not strutual so you can just bolt plates over the rust holes cuts welding down to a min.

Yea i reckon if you were able to do some prep work for the welding ie- cleaning up the areas to be welded and possible cutting up some plates ready, im sure someone on here would entertain the work, as  like most jobs its the preparation that takes a large amount of the time,  even if you havent got an angle grinder or could borrow one? a new one costs from £15, lets see what the full list is for the mot.      by the time you have spent traveling around for another motor you could have done most/all the work on yours :-k

Well its not as bad as I thought!  The list of failures is:

Nearside sill needs replacing (or at least a patch that covers 90% of it).  Sidelamp (bulb but I didnt bother after I spotted the sill), Nearside number plate lamp not fitted (anyone got one?), Offside front wheel bearing excessive play, Nearside front wheel bearing excessive play and swivel joint leaking oil.

The advice notes are hole in rear crossmember (not in prescribed area) steering drop arm ball joint slight play and nearside inner wing corroded not in prescribed area.

My own list includes discs and pads all round, cv joint and the hub seal which failed anyway.

Looks like I am going to fix it!  Getting some prices for the welding tomorrow.  If its silly money I will worry about that then.  Well thanks for the encouragement people, you convinced me to fix her up and damage her again!

So glad it went well for you. the inner wings can be plated and bolted they dont have to be welded as its not structual. and inner cills not bad to plate over. (or good excuss to buy some rock sliders to hide them  ). the rest is prity easy to do.
Will be moting my next week fingers crossed

Looks like it it staying in one piece.  Still not sure who is doing the welding yet, might take winchman up on the offer of that number!

Anyway, every time I put a landy in for MOT i dread rust!  I enrolled on an evening course at college today - fabrication and welding!  Slightly spur of the moment but what the hell.  Hopefuly I will do it myself next year :D
