What colour is diesel??
« on: October 16, 2006, 14:54:35 »
It never occurred to me before, but last time I changed the fuel filter, I was pleasantly surprised to fid it was a lovel shade of almost luminous yellow/green.

but yesterday I changed it again and found it to be blue, almost turquoise!!!

whats goin' on?  Is it the addition of veg oil?

Always thought it was a sorta purple lavander'ish shade.

I know petrol goes yellow as it ages and picks up moiture.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

Didn't I read somewhere that there was some dodgy fuel imported from Ireland I think, it was red diesel that had been treated with an acid to remove the colour.

That had produced some strange colours.

If you filter red diesel through Fullers Earth cream, it removes the red dye. Apparently.

winter diesel is bluish as it has antifreeze added to it. and in the summer it will be its normal colour.

I am with the every colour of the rainbow theory!  I got a drum that had been syphoned out of a car.  It was a small car that was nearly empty of petrol when its careful owner filled it with diesel.  It would have been about 90% diesel.

It was a semi clear plastic drum, looked blue from one side with the light behind me (i was chuffed, about to stick it in the disco) and then yellow from the other side with light shining through it!  Half filled the disco with diesel and then chucked it in, didnt do any harm (so far anyway) :D

the shade has changed to a more green colour in the last few months, it could be to bring us inline with europe.

but gas oil in norway is blue, and VOSA sell a die in britain that is orange i think, this is road legal and is for the purpose of employers to track diesel, ie an employee nicking it.

Diesel is a very very light brown ie almost clear.  As said it''s the additives that colour it.

BTW, mix irish green diesel with our red diesel and it goes brown, brown diesel is another name for white diesel, it's true colour.
