Help please

Never done this before on a Landy so any advice would be welcome.I have a lot of play in the front offside wheel bearing,how do I tighten the bearing and do I need anything more than a spanner and a socket set. :oops:

not a difficult thing to do, but you will need a big socket that will fit the hub nuts. they are about 2 inchs across, maybe more, so it needs a special tool. any landrover garage should stock them.
do you have freewheel hubs? they can be a [!Expletive Deleted!] to get off, if you dont know how they fit.
if you dont have freewheel hubs, then the job should only take about 15 minutes. first, pull off the centre cap on the flange, and undo the nut in the center. this might have a split pin in it, i cant remember. then undo the 6 smaller bolts around the edge of the flange, and pull the flange off the splined shaft. you should now be able to see the big hubnuts.
bend the locking tab away from the first hub nut, then remove the nut completely, and then remove the locking washer.
after that you can tighten up the inner hubnut, but making sure the wheel still spins freely. when your done, put it all back in the way it came out, but with a new gasket if you want it to not leak oil.

thats it. fairly easy and straight forward. if you have standard landy rims, you dont even have to take the wheel off.

They aren't that difficult.  They just replace the Land Rover hub and depending on which make they are they come off just as easily.  Mine came straight off when you undid the six bolts holding them on.  Be brave, have a poke around and go for it.

what type of hub are they? have they got any makers mark on them?

Have undone the 6 bolts but the freewheeling hub will not come off,it just spins.

dont forget that when you remove the bolts, then it will allow the vehicle to move, even with the handbrake on. You should chock one of the wheels, and maybe if you jack the offending wheel up it may free it off. When tightening the bearing, by rule of thumb, you do the inner nut up tight, and back it off a sixth of a turn (or one flat). Dont forget to put the locking tab back over. Still can't get the hub off,spins and moves about 10mm in and out but won't come off.Am I missing the obvious

You may need to remove those little screws on the outside of the hub, normally hexagonal screws, good luck with them they can be sods

Would that be those small rounded off one's :lol: ,if these have to come off I'll have to drill the heads off so need to know for sure before I do it.
        Am now very wet and very p****d off with life,4 hours to remove 6 bolts and get nowhere.

hmmm, those hubs are different from mine, and i dont know how to get them apart.

looking at that picture, are there 6 very small screws around the cap of the hub? jsut outside the disk that turns to engage the/disengage the hub.

one other thing, there will be one or more springs inside the freewheel hub, so be careful when you take it apart.

Try a pointed screwdriver tapped into the screws, put as much twist on the screw as you can and then tap it again with the hammer, they might give way, normally only the first resistance and then they should come out easily, then look for some replacement screws

Drilled the heads off and tapped the hub out to 5mm.Me thinks I need to get some new bearings,Paddock Spares here I come :lol:

I wish I was but this weekend holds the fun of prop shaft gaiters and decorating the living room(one of these I don't mind doing) :lol: .Will have to get the bearings posted.
