If You mean mechanical PTO Winch then yes have lots of experiance using them at work, Like every winch there are davantages and disadvantages.

With a mechanical winch you can forward winch in all 5 gears and payout in reverse, the superwinch ones found on most utility rovers can pull about 6 ton and can ofetn be found fairly cheap on ebay for the complete package.

To buy new they are very expensive around 3-4K I belive. Just becarefull buying secondhand as I belive drive shaft spares can be expensive
Land Rover Defender 130 with Hyd winch and Log splitter, also has just the odd light here and there!!!

Yup i have one on my truck, they are very very strong and as said can winch in all gears, high/low diff lock/unlock or neutral box, they are idealy a two man operation though as the winch speed is controlled by gears/throttle, and the free spool can be a tad hard to get into neut5ral when then einch is under load, i find its best to clutch in and spool out a little bit.

For long periods of serious winching they are supposed to be good, nothing to overheat, but i beleave hydraulic are the way to go, if you can afford one, only problem with a PTO is of course, if your engine is stalled/dead, you have no winch.....
