What's your TD Fuel economy like?
« on: November 02, 2006, 08:17:34 »
I have a 2.5TD 90 which was very smoky to say the least. (Detailed on another thread) I managed to reduce this drastically by sorting out valve clearances. However, I'm still not convinced it is within normal limits as you can still see a lot of 'fog' when driving at night with lights behind you.
It does not appear to be using oil or water and when you see the smoke during the day it is still black.

Basically, I think it is suffering from a fuel problem such as worn injectors or someone has been messing around with the fuelling setup - boost etc.
Can anyone tell me how many miles theyt would expect to get from a TD on a full tank. My last tank got me 240 miles of which 210 were on the motorway (at about 60) and about 30 were off-road.

Hopefully this will give me some clues!

Thanks in advance,

Simon.

Sounds about the same as mine, worked out at last fill up that is was putting out 23mpg, which I thought was quite good
As for smoke at night, I get that from a 3 year old Zafira, it's just that the lights make it more apparent and wouldn't worry it's what deisels do I thought

You will get some "Fog" during nightdriving!
They all do that, It's just a question of how you drive.
I used to get between 24-30mpg out of my TD.
It's not a bad engine, just look after it.
Change the oil regularly,& take it easy!

Sounds normal on both counts, Nothing to worry about.

My dad's TD is the same that has some visual fog at night but in the day it burns clear with no smoke.

He can get 220 miles to a tank if he's towing but he get's 235 - 250 for road work and motorway running.

Not only do you see "fog" at night with the TD.
Also with the Tdi both 200 and 300

My Astra diesel was the same at night.

What are the TD's like towing? I'm exploring options for a 110 at the mo and would be towing a caravan with a max weight of around 1300kg's down through France.... what sort of cruising speed is comfortable and how is the gearing?

Mine's probably not a good example. It has trouble hauling itself up hills, let alone a trailer. TDis probably a better bet these days unless you're on a really tight budget. (Like me   )

better than a series - not as good as a tdi but quite adequate, comfortable 55 -65 mph - also cheaper as MOST people dont like them, as they have a bad rep!
but also easily upgradable to Tdi if you feel the need for extra power later!
Hope that helps!
