97 200 TDi ?
« on: November 06, 2006, 15:56:43 »
I have been offered this 200 series Disco, which is on a "Q" plate.

Looking up the registration on the DVLA shows the date of first registration as 01/06/1997.  Is this the date that it was recovered and re-registered, as I thought 200's were all pre 96 (ish).

It's quite tidy (a few cosmetic mods not to my taste), but essentially I was going to give my Father to use.

136K on the clock, 12 months MOT, anyone know how much it's worth?

Cheers
Horness

You're right, the 200 TDi stopped being put in Discos in 1994 so, unless some has put a 200 TDi engine into a 300 series body, then you have a pre 1994 vehicle that has been re-registered on a Q plate.

Kit car, ex-MOD and vehicles that don't make the points total required to keep an original regestration when rebuilt from different vehciles were issued with the Q plate so check on the history a bit more.

It's a 200 series through-and-through, but the DVLA registration is 01/06/1997.  I presume this is when the "Q" was assigned.

The current owners are parents of a friend of mine, and if I want it, it's well under book value, even for a 3 door 200 on a Q.  The previous owner must have loved it as there are loads of little (cheap!) comfort mods.

There is a full history of servicing, 12 months MOT, and a bill for a recent gearbox/tbox rebuild.

As it won't be a daily drive, the only real set back is the Q plate on the insurance.  For the money I'd be paying for the vehicle, a £40 HPi seems expensive.

If its on Q plate the chances are that it has had an insurance claim against it at some point, hence it will be on the register with a catergoty attached giving some indication as too why its a Qplate. The trade values such vehicles, at half book value, hope this helps.....

Hi Horness

so what was the outcome of the HPI check ?>

Was it an insurance write off with a category attached?

Or other reason - did you buy?

Yes mine was first registered abroad and DVLA registered it based on the original build date so to get a Q plate there must be something up with it.

Hi Guys - I'm still considering this Disco.

I have not had a HPI done, but the owners have shown me all the paperwork regarding the "Q" plate.  It's a 95 vehicle which was stolen in 97, and when it was found (some 18 months later) it had been completely stripped.  It was rebuilt, mainly using 200 series parts, but as age/origin of the parts used could not be verified, the DVLA gave it a Q plate.

Since the rebuild nearly 6 years ago, it's been through every MoT with nothing more than bulbs etc. on the check sheets, has recently had the boot floor welded, and now has a full service and 12 months MoT under it's belt.
It does have a leaky front sunroof.

Essentially - the owners have offered it me for next to nothing, as they know I'll use it.  I won't be paying any more than about £600 for it, possibly less.

As I've been away in France for a week, and my Devon winch bumper has arrived - I'd forgot all about it!

Well you know the history, I would have no issues with that as long as as you are happy with it, £600 or less seems ok to me.

I would check with your insurance company first... to see how much it will cost as its on a Q plate.
If want to walk it walk it, if you want to ride it ride it just leave me alone to drive it!

Sounds pretty good - for £600 I'd go for it as long as insurance is OK.

Yep - for that money you don't need to worry about re-sale value, just drive it till it dies.

Knowing it's history, and buying it from a (presumably) truested source is a bonus - I'd bite their arm off.

Might be worth trying one of the specialist insurers like Adrian Flux who cover 4x4's and kit cars (often on Q-plates)
