Is my new number plate legal?
« on: November 13, 2006, 15:28:09 »
I dropped into Halfrauds yesterday to get a new plate - the old one is becoming unreadable. I was mildly amused to have to 'prove my entitlement' to buy one, seems a bit contradictory to the law 'requiring me to have one'. I don't think the excuse "Oh sorry officer, it turns out I'm not entitled to buy a plate..." would work.

Anyhow, long story short; the new plate does not have on it the maker and phone number - I thought all new plates had to have that?

I'm not bothered, I'm just going to claim I had it made when I got the vehicle as a spare...

Plus I had an amusing in the shop - going to pay for said plate a woman stopped me and said "Can you help me or are you serving someone else?", "Er no, I'm a customer" I replied. "Well how the £$%% was I to know" she shot back. Some people...

its bloody stupid, we cant sell a number plate without seeing driving licens(or similar) and V5. Like the bloke who is buying a plate is gonna be a criminal. The criminals take em off a parked car, like so many of our customers find out.

You can get plates(show plates) without all that guff, by stating they are for display purposes only.
Go on....cut me in half........it says SUZUKI all the way thru the middle!!

And.......the Police Station is 200yrds further down the road  :?

I dont have any markings of where the plate or the car was purchased on the front of puggy... and thinking about it we didnt have any details put on Rabbits front plate when we had that remade after loosing it to a puddle! The rear plate however is still the cars orriginal plate.

for show style plates i think possible the best place is http://www.showplates.com but dont quote me on it..

And a last note ive not been pulled for having 'number one playbunnie' on the bottom of me plate rather than location of purchaser.

Bloke who makes me plates used to know my dad (who was probably his teacher) so I don't have any difficulty with proving who I am.

But I'd say if that's how they were supplied, how are you to know different, besides, there is no law against your old plates that didn't have that info so who's to know.

Wifey has been running around on pressed black n silver plates for a couple of years now on her 90 (which is a couple of years old  )
Never had any trouble at all from any party, didnt even get a mention on her speeding ticket or spotted when she parked it up for the day in the car park to do her "driver safety awareness" day,

I guess its down to the area ya live in and how you drive,( i guess a nice smile probally helps also  )

For reference purposes whe now run the correct colour plates

I put some reflective yellow tape over the dealers name on my Micra, firstly because they didn't pay me to advertise on my car and secondly I don't want anyone thinking I endorse them in any way when they were so s**t!

I had mine made at
http://www.cheapestplates.co.uk/
Tel: 01744 630831 Mob: 07971 283838
(ask for Mandy) she delt with our purchase and is brill.

They are very nice and I reckon one of the cheapest.
I had 6 plates made with badges, borders and text for £53 inc VAT and P+P.
Mine are technically show plates but the text is the same spacing, size and font as standard plates .
I showed them to local booby and he said they were fine. Even commented on how smart they looked.
I reckon you would have to have a right jobsworth to get pulled for them.

when was there ever a Peugeot garage in Daventry?

What is the dealer at the bottom of the high street where the market is? It is on a roundabout.

I'm sure it is a Peugot one. They were very friendly as they gave me a cuppa tea whilst I waited for the plate to be made and they were happy and willing to help.

We make road legal plates where I work and to do so we have to be registered with the DVLA, we also have to check and record certain details of entitlement i.e V5 and a matching proof of ID like a passport or driving licence. As for whats written at the bottom of the plate that depends on who they are being sold to, if we sell them to joe public then we have to have our business name and post code on, if we sell them to a motor trader then they have to either show the same entitlements and proof of id to us or become registered with the DVLA as a supplier (think it costs around £40) then being a supplier they must have their name and post code on the plates but in turn they are then the ones who are required to check and record their customers details.  The whole system changed a couple of years ago and within the motor industry has created huge confusion, mainly due to the vagueness of the information that has been made available.

This thing of putting the makers name on the bottom of the plate seems  bit odd.
It is more than likely for free advertising, but a conspiracy theorist may add "Its another way of the authorities to check on you".
For anyone who may be interested (and I don't blame you if you aren't), these are the rules relating to plates, according to the good books of
The Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 and The Road Vehicles (registration and Licensing) Regulations 1971.

Are you ready for this? Its really exciting!

Motor vehicles first registered on or after 1.1.73 must carry a registration mark which conforms to the following:
1) A British Standard specification number
2) It must be legible and permanently marked
3) the numbers and letters must be black, vertical and easily distiguishable
4)They must be exhibited on a plate ( a nice wedgewood one perhaps?)
5) that consists of a reflective material (rules out the wedgewood)
6) It must be illuminated in the hours of darkness
7) with a white background on the front and yellow on the rear

Wow, I'm really excited by that! NOT!

It makes no mention of the makers/dealers name. Cheap advertising?

Number one in that list is the crux as all new number plates must conform to BSAU145d and I believe that is where the relevent details re:postcode/name of shop will be found. The makers name and postcode must be on there so as if the police are investigating where a particular plate came from they can check with the shop what details they have on file.

Nothing to say the plates we not made before the legistation came into force :D
If I wanted a clever answer, I'd have asked a clever person!

Absolutely, the regulation is on plate manufacturers (I mean the guy who sticks the numbers on, not the plastics factory) and not the owner/end user.  Once in your possesion the only thing that is required is the correct reflective background and the style and size of the letters, correctly spaced.

You can legaly have "Janet Street Porter is a hypocrite (in my opinion)" accross the bottom, as long as the numbers themselves are correct.

I like that idea, but I wonder what would happen if I added " and a horse faced, whiny voiced, old crone"?

If it fits "into an area 178 x 13mm, centered at the bottom of the plate" ;)

I've used malplates.co.uk for our motorcycle plates and been very pleased
They have a nice description of the rules and regs here

[soapbox]

All this legislation has achieved is to make it harder for honest people to comply with the law.

Given the nature of the new V5C, it wouldn't take much time with an A3 colour laser printer (I know two people with them) to make a fake document good enough to fool a number plate maker; after all, they have no way of checking the various barcodes and numbers on the document are real. Alternatively, and probably easier, I'm quite sure given the actual guy who did the plate is probably on mimimum wage, an offer of fifty notes on the side for him to do it when no one was looking....

It's all just part of this governments stupid plan to pass more and more laws to make it look like they are doing something rather than actually enforce the ones that we already have.

[/soapbox]

Sorry, puncture in the p****ing rain last night and I now have a cold and a rally to sort out for weekend after next. Just slightly loosing it now   :(bloodshot):
