Hassle on a legal right of way
« on: November 20, 2006, 15:15:39 »
I leached this from a usenet newsgroup. I think the situation was dealt with extremley well by the motorcyclists. It just goes to show the prejudice that we as offroaders are having to endure. Some of the comments in relation to the situation on usenet have been, how can i put this, a little crass.

I would be interested to hear views of this clubs members

The following is a video shot by Andy Tasker of the Trail Riders
Fellowship (motorbike equivalent of GLASS).  He is a clued up chap,
and has in the past presented points of view and discussions that seem
to sugeest he knows his stuff.

What is there to say, they were acting responsibly and got held up by a muppet who was clearly spouting rubbish. Its not uncommon and thankfully they not only acted correctly, but were polite and patient and got it all on film :)

As a GLASS Rep I can only applaud Andy in the manner in which he handled this miss-informed ignoramous.

The old rule still stands, if you don't want to meet motor vehicles when out walking/riding then don't go where we are legally allowed to be, use the 94% of lanes and paths where we are not allowed to be!!!.

I dare say that the TRF guys have done their research and know that they are in the right.
Unfortunately, some people don't like that.
I'm just wondering what the TRF policy is about the number of bikes in a group i.e the guideline given in the LRO Greenlane Code is to travel in groups of four or less. Although there is no legal requirement to limit numbers, that could have been a reason why cyclist bloke got ratty.
I'm just playing devil's advocate on that point.
I had a similar experience a couple of years ago in the Lake District.
I had a female rambler stand in front of my Disco on the Walna Scar Road, calling me an eco terrorist and threatening to get the Police there to have me arrested for damaging the rock track.
In regards to the cyclist in the footage; it was fairly evident that he doesn't like other people carrying out an activity that they enjoy, legally.
On another note, I wonder what the old boy in the red Rover was upto? A bit of fly tipping perhaps?

Well done him.

I was only out all of three weeks ago and was met by a person who although said nothing was cleary not happy about the presence of the 4 landies Crawling up the UCR towards him.
What i then saw i couldn't actually belive my ears (as i had gone on and was told on the CB by the sweeper), That he got out a pad of paper and  a pen, then preceded to take down details of out vehicles. If i had seen this i would of questioned him to his actions.
The area in question Is near a village called harburton, It is main demographic is second home owners or those who have retired from the major cities to a 'Rural villiage in the country' the houses are worth a lot and the peoples attitudes are plain snobbish. Lord ShaggPyle, i think we have both met the same woman on Walna Scar lol, she didnt like it when i told her that my 13 year old discovery was more economical at the time than my brand new vauxhall astra lol.

But the TRF dude did good, think they should approach the police about the incident, then the fella might think twice.

Why am I not surprised by that? Are these the same sort of people that expect the locals to be dressed in smocks, with string round their knees, a piece of straw in their mouths  to doff their caps to the 'incomers' and say 'Ooh Arr' a lot?
I used to work in an area similar to that and the 'incomers' would complain about the smell of the manure on the fields, the noise from the combines during harvest and also the fact that the irrigators would sometimes spray water onto the road! Oh My God! What a catastrophe! Try slowing down and turning your wipers on, you planks!
Sorry, but I have no time for people like that.

Would the guy give his details for the Police to be able to visit him? Some how I don't think he would. I'm very surprised he didn't come out with the line of "You were all going too fast along this track". From what I saw he wasn't going that slow himself.
I was waiting for a bit on the video to see if the TRF guys came round a  bend to see the cyclist ploughing into a rambler.

Re the woman on the Walna Scar, she went on about calling the Police, I said that they would probably get there by Landrover; she didn't like that.
She liked it even less when I produced my I.D card, and informed her that she was commiting an offence. She shut up after that.

From the beggining trying to find a BOAT is like trying to find a unopened can of larger at a student party.

Yes they are UCR's GR start (277,584) finish (277, 576) comes out of the small villiage of Harberton.

I live in a small village on the outskirts of plymouth and unfortuanately there are some inhabitants who take exception to the fact that:
The local farm smells when the wind blows in the right direction.
The roads will be muddy due to the tractors,
The cows will make a lot of noise when the calfs are taken away,
The church bells do make a noise on a sunday morning,
They will have to reverse when faced with the tractor with a huge trailer up behind,
The combine makes noise when it is working in the field behind your house and no it doesn't do a 10 till 4 work day it'll continue till it's finished.

The above is the tip of the iceberg that the complaints i hear when i'm down the pub and talking to some of the more friendly neighbours.

One person is such a downright miserable person of questionable perantage that although the houses next to the local social club don't have any issue, he who lives 200 meters up the road continues to make complaints to the councill and the environmental health that there is excessive noise. And it has been known that he will loiter around his front garden during the evening around when the club is shutting just to listen for noise.  :x  now that really annoys me. And he also bullies the two neighbours each side of his house. for noise and disturbance. But he will only apporach the lower side when the mrs is home and above him there is a widow who is 70 odd. He will not say a thing when a bloke is about. Ohhh makes me mad that these sad people can get away with making other peoples lives a misery.

Just as an extra to this, my wife has just seen the video and has pointed out that when she has been on out on her horse on the byways round here, all the trail bikers that she has met, have always stopped, switched off the engines and waited until the horse was past before heading off again.
She also has pointed out that if they didn't, it was more than likely that a horse would spook and kick out, so the bikers obviously have sense.

i don't normally have a lot of time for bikers, but i thought these guys handled that situation brilliantly. they were clued up on the law, knew they were allowed to be there and didn't loose their rag with that monkey.

I met one in kent a few years ago, on a realy narrow lane, he walked in front of the landy at a very slow pace to try and prove his point, my blood was boiling with rage but i just let him get on with it....

we also got moaned at by a farmer in wales this weekend, who rudely abused my mates girlfriend (who was on foot snapping some pictures of us tackling some rocks...) and took our reg numbers, he sped off in his 90 before we could get to him/ get hold of him.
we were on a byway that we were legally allowed to drive.

well done all of you who handle these ejits so calmly... as one of them is going to get battered one day, as someone will loose their cool big time.

i'd rather drive away than get into a row, but i know some people have a shorter fuse.

the trouble is that if you watch that video from the other perspective we could come across as confrontational (granted as a way of defending ourselves) and a shade arrogant,  likewise the summation at the end could do harm too..

Then again, we're doomed anyhow, so I suppose it matters naught

Surely if the road is closed to motorbikes like the cyclist was saying then he would be tresspassing too as mountain bikes rent allowed either then?

As far as I am aware they arent allowed on footpaths etc.

An engined bike is very similar to a man powered bike? Correct me if I am wrong.

dudes rest assured that the proper mtb users feel the same way and are on the side of the trail riders

i put this link on an mtb forum and the comments coming back arent suitable for this forum for their language (aimed at the bloke on the pushbike)

must admit that when ive been "offroading" on my bike i have been on the receiving end of ramblers whinging bout the ruts we create!... but you can clearly see where their footprints are but the bikes arent as damaging

Had this quite a few years ago in Wales, rambler tried telling me i was breaking the law cycling on a footpath, i asked him to show me on the map. I had to point out that we were not where he said and were on a bridalway.  We cycled off after explaining the difference in footpath and bridalway and didn't even get a thanks for showing the rambler where he was on a map!

It's funny but when I did the Gap last month never heard one complaint from any of the walkers or cyclists - even had one cyclist hold a gate open for us   guess none of the walkers were ramblers

Not only was he allowed to be there he had paid to be there as well via his Road Tax. Something the cyclists don't pay for but get to use and erode!
