Adice needed for a Green new comer
« on: November 26, 2006, 18:06:35 »
Hi...I am really green about all this.
I have a standard...off the shelf 03 Jimny.
Before I get into anything to muddy and deep ..is there anything that I should change or do to the Jimny.

I would like to get some help, I have only joined this forum to get help and advice, so be gentle.....please.

Also if there is anyone out there....living in the Preston Lancs area. that would like to maybe have a chat.

Ok.....lets have your comments
please dont tell me to get rid of my Jimny.

Thanks
Ron

Hi,

All I did to my SJ was change the tyres to MT's and eventually fitted a Snorkle and some Axle Breathers, I find the SJ loves the water, goes anywhere.....

When I asked about Jimny's here a while back they got praise from all, my advice is to just make sure the bits that need to stay dry, stay dry....

Get a good recovery rope / strap and get used to pulling Defenders out of trouble

Have Fun

Yep, I would have to agree 100% with Fudge (I'm sure he'll be pleased about that  :P   ). A good set of tyres will be the best investment for getting through the sloppy stuff. But you will always think that you can get through more and more, so at some point you will get stuck   At which point you need stuff to get you hauled out. Straps and shackles.

I am not sure what the towing points are like on the Jimny out of the box, but you may need something a bit more substantial. Others with more knowledge of the Jimny will be able to advise better.

Otherwise, you have a great little motor there that is proven to be very capable off road.

Thanks Fudge....I read your back artical, I was quite impressed witth the praise my little motor got, (as the model).
Also thanks for the advice on tyres.
Any advice on where to get the best deal for wheels and tyres.
I really would like a set of Alloys and off road tyres on the original rims.
But thats going to cost....better get saving and creating a wish list.
Thanks V8Moneypit I had already thought about your bit of advice....but someone told me it was for dragging others out....I seem to remember.
Thanks
Ron

Hi Ron

Welcome to the wonderful muddy world of "off-roading"

As previously mentioned, it's all about grip in/on the rough-stuff so tyres are everything.  I think 215/75/15 are about as big as you can go on a Jimny without lifting the body/suspension.

It all depends on your budget.  Colway M/T (mud terrains) are a good budget tyre but will give a bit of a roar when you're on the tarmac.

Jimny's are excellent trucks - have fun and enjoy
- Project SE416 -

Feel the FEAR - and do it anyway!!  :)

ive seen jimnys with standard road tyres go where my sj has problems :!:  (also on road tyres), although that was in sand, its the mud you got to watch with road tyres.

if your careful you can still have a lot of fun without doing anything to it.  Jimnys are good little wagons, its just the styling of the things I don’t like.
