Tuning up a rover V8 3.5
« on: October 12, 2004, 22:30:37 »
Just wanting to know some advise in relation to tuning up a rover V8.

My ideal would be to get someone in to tune it up but i don't seem to be able to find any mobile engine tuners nowadays.

Also the local garage kindly said he would have a go at tuning by ear (for £40-00,

at £40-00 i want it done correctly.

Would it be easier to buy a carb balencer and strobe light to do myself or would you suggest more?

and please feel free to offer to come over and show a novice how to do it

If you know what the tools are I would suggest you buy or borrow some and do the basics yourself, then you can take your time and know it's done right.  The V8 EFi can be a bit sulky if the plugs arn't right, also the leads and rotor arm.  Much worse if on LPG, try closing the plug gap up for gas to about 27 thou'.
When you've done as much as you can it's time to call in a pro but honestly, the number of people who've told me horror stories about tuning 'specialists'..... Like a friend who spent hundreds having a cosie rolling road tuned only to have it run like a cow, when he checked through the basics the exhaust cam was a tooth out!
Ask a few people like your local motor factor for recomendations, I'm sure your get some from this site as well, then ring them and ask some questions.  It soon becomes obvious when you're talking to someone who knows what they're about.

BTW,im most impressed that the cossie managed to run as normally even the smallest thing makes them no go,on my 90 racer i striped the carbs down & using the proper lr workshop manual set them up as spec, also remove the bolt from the throttle pedal stop helps,as does removin most o the slack out the cable, also did exactly the same to my dads 110 V8,made a huge difference as did balancing the carbs.

I did see a kit to do it on ebay a while ago but not since

any clues what they are called and where to get one from.

Gunsons make a carb balancer, reasonable price (if still in production).

Went to www.gunsons.co.uk and found the carb balancer.

I have to say what a cra%#y web site for ordering,

It crashed a number of times (just where you click to confirm)

so i will probably end up with 5 kits.

in the end i gave up and emailed them to get them to contact me.

just think how much fun you could have with an engine that NEEDED 5 carb balancers!

the best place to look to get 4 Su's on a V8 is ebay & search for rover V8,what your looking for is a boxer inlet manifold set up,not many were made & they are a c*%t to set up to run well, although the power increas is worth it IMHO.
