Range Rover 3.5 v8 into series 2a SWB

I have a range rover v8 3.5 + range rover 4 speed gear box, first of all as the gearbox is fixed four wheel drive will the series axels be ok. what major mods do i need to do to get the engine + gearbox in. I also have a Land Rover 90 2.25 gearbox can this go stright onto the V8 i would perfere to fit the 90 box as it is five speed + easyer to fit that range rover box i think! :D

Thanks for any help! I need all the help i can get!!!

Howdo 8)  Just wait for Mark Yellow to come along. He's got a V8 in his Series with an LT95 box. Had to have custom props made, but I'm sure he'll give plenty good advice :wink: (also need him to give help and advice for when my V8 goes in :wink: )

The front Series axle (apart from the Stage One axle) is unable to sustain permament four wheel drive without damage to the swivel components.

You will have to modify the chassis' transmission mounts to fit either the LT95 you have with the V8, or for the LT77 that is in your Ninety.

You can get conversion kits that mean you can keep the standard 2.25 engine mounts on the chassis, and just basically bolt the 3.5 Litre Rover V8 up to the Series gearbox.  As long as you're not thrashing it, the gearbox should be okay for a long time.

I assume the engine is a 3.5 Litre on carbs?

not just that, you get some rather strange feedback through the steering wheel.

The axle problem is because Series Landys, apart from the Stage 1 V8 use UJ joints and permanent 4WD require CV joints.
Who needs brakes???

hey hey, iam here.

all ill say is it was a complete git :(
i would never do it again, everything you can think of needs to be custom made to fit, including hand brake linkage, engine and gearbox mounts, bulkhead, all cables and wires, custom made props, custom made exhauste, both gear sticks, gearbox tunnel.

i havent changed the front axle, mainly cos i cant be arsed, as its only a weekend mudplugger, but all is ok so far. the feed back through the steering wheel is nearly undectable, and iam not worried about it.

Not without an adaptor... unless the gearbox is a V8 specific one?

The other option would be to look for a LT77 out of a mid 80's RR - you should be able to find one with a 'Long Stick' gear lever - not the later short stick.  
This is basically the same gearbox as your 90 one, but with a V8 bellhousing and main shaft.

Or you could get a 5 speed LT85 Santana box... slightly rarer - but very strong!!!  Is the V8 specifc gearbox that was fitted to V8 90 and 110's.
(as it happens I've got one for sale  :wink: )

Sorry, I forgot about the pedantic people on this forum  :wink:

The later 90 and 110's from about 1986 onwards were fitted with the 5 speed Santana LT85 Gearbox...

Until the early 90's.... when the V8's were special order only.
Then they were fitted with long stick V8 spec LT77s - as were the pre auto NAS 90's and the NAS 110's. (both V8's)

From 1994 onwards, the V8 special order Defenders were fitted with the R380 gearbox.
