Strange noise update
« on: December 02, 2006, 20:01:47 »
driving around today hear for the first time a noise sounds like a low rumble with a thump thump as the wheels turn. ran it for a bit and felt the hubs none of them were hot all felt around the same temp it is speed related as the thump increases with speed. any ideas were to start checking. have looked at the brakes and they look ok and likei said the whhel stations were not hot after running it around for about 40 mins so dont think its wheel bearings but over to you lot and see whet you lot think Oh its a 1992 v8 3.5 manual 5 speed

I'm with that one.

Doesn't take a large bulge on an inner wall to produce those symptoms.

Have you checked that your wheel nuts are tight? I had this with alloys, for some reason they kept loosening off. I eventually cranked them with the air gun and that sorted them. previously I would torque them up.

Stone in the tread, cut or bulge in the tyre.

Checked all the tyres and they are all ok no bits missing and no lumps or bumps. So thinking if the wheel stations are not getting hot could it be the uj's

Could be uj park on flat ground, chock wheels out of gear and handbrake off and just give the uj's a good wiggle if you have any play chances are that your problem mate. Off work tomorrow so if you need a hand give me a bell.
Also could be cv's do you get any noise on full lock.

Well.........after a days playing there was a grumble on the rear wheel......knowing the LR's i knew that it was the bearing and thought i could get home as i have done many times before........so 50mph all the way home down the A1 and off it came.....after a closer look it appears that the bearing lock nuts have come off and then sat the hub on the stub axle/drive shaft.....then snap......drive shaft gave up and broke the brake disc and then the wheel over took me.......not a nice experience with wife and baby on board........but we are all fine.

Well here is the update.
The noise stopped during the week so.car loaded up and me and shmbo set off for sunny north wales to vist the perants. Got as far as uttoxitor and the car pulled sharp right at 60mph followed by a loud metallic sound and a loud squeal got the car stright and got it into a car park checked the front drivers side wheel station and it was not hot had a good look at ti and could not see anything up with it there was no movement in the wheel. so drove it around a roundabout and no noise. then it started to make a grumbling sound and a thumping with a squeal. so limped it home and the noise got louder plus when i brake it felt ruff not smooth on the brake pedel. so its not sat in the drive waitting for me to look at it tomorrow think its the wheel bearing that has gone. which if it is that did well to get me home a round trip of about 40 miles
