We see exactly the same with the “proper old Land Rover”. It’s rubbish: uncomfortable, slow, impractical and with prices starting at £20,000, not that cheap. But nobody has the courage to pull the plug on a 60-year tradition, and start again. But somebody should.

No, because Clarkson had a 110 for the day and took it around London and was in awe at the way in which other road users threw themselves from his path.  

Something doesn't have to be good, or the best, to be cool. It just have to have that certain 'something' about it. And like them or hate them, Defenders are a real motoring icon, and there ain't many of them about these days.

I am in complete agreement, infact, I feel he was being very kind.

Sooner they are gone, the better for all of us, I really do dread seeing a LandRover up ahead when I am on the road, they are a pain in the proverbial, only knocked off first place by horseboxes :roll:

I can't see too much wrong with this article either. I always find his writing very amusing and entertaining. This is no exception. Basically, he's right. The Defender is outdated. There is no reason, in this day and age, why a capable off road vehicle can't be ergonomically designed and have a decent heater and comfortable seats!

I absolutely love my old 110. It makes a great load lugger. It pulls out tree stumps. It doesn't matter too much if I dent it. It is excellent off road. But it's dreadful to drive any distance. And there is no way I would ever go out and spend £21k on a new one. There are far better options around now.

I drive mine (Discovery - muddy and battered) into the middle of Nottingham everday, and have to agree, gaps appear from nowhere when the lanes merge  :twisted:

I agree whole heartedly.

I have driven LRs since 1989 NA to start with now Turbo D and TDi.
I can fix it on my drive and I even fixed it in the deserts of Iceland a couple of hundred miles from Civilisation.

We had a Toymotor driver in to fix a computer and he went on and on about how reliable his 4x4 was.  Then I showed him the pictures of what we get up to.  He was gobsmacked he would never risk doing that sort of stuff with his toymotor.
Then I told him that I had been doing this stuff in my 90 since 1990.

They might not be the fastest, they might not even be the best off road, smaller, lighter may be better but it is still the worlds most VERSATILE vehicle.  I went to wales with 6 people on board and all the gear for a long weekend climbing, hiking and biking all in one vehicle.

Some friends of ours have Suzukis and keep telling us how wonderful they are, but they had to get us to take some of their stuff to the National.  And he spends all hours in the garage moding it so it can go where my 90 can.
