HOW DUMB CAN PEOPLE BE ??
« on: December 08, 2006, 11:54:12 »
   UNBELIEVABLE

We have a local ford in Headly (hampshire) which usually trundles along about 12-18 inches deep (perfect)   BUT  Due to the recent drop of rain it is now showing 3 metres (10 foot) on the depth stick    and a fair old flow to say the least,

Just heard on the local radio that the police have closed it off for safety reasons----- on 3 seperate occassions yesterday people had to be rescued from the roofs of there cars which had been washed away down stream    I dont know what vehicles were involved but  there was no mention of any 4x4s (trust me, our local radio would have mentioned it if they were)      I may be slightly more experienced than mr joe average on water crossings but it aint rocket science to see if the depth stick is showing 10 foot its propbally unlikely youre going to make it  #-o

Might pop down there  over the near future to keep an eye on things though

yea surely is (thinks it thornhill road :-k )  popped down there today for a shifty around, the water level has dropped back to about 3 feet (7 foot less than yesterday) But as i was wandering over the bridge some thing caught my eye down stream,   Pics to follow as soon as swmbo gets home to make em fit on here,( im a bit IT challenged :? )

Howdy jake--  no its not that one but now it very well though, have seen one or two vehicles pinned up against the bridge in the past though

A flyfisherman down stream!

Sorry, that was a cr*p attempt at humour.

If it is the one I'm thinking of, it has a concrete bottom and curves round? I've done most of the fords in that area, during the summer, in a Job BMW 330 estate. It saved time washing the car and was more fun!

I know the one.

It is usually like the below.

I went through one the other night up stream and it was over the boonet and up the screen. Not bad for a V8. However it was only about 30 feet across.

Mill lane is a good ford though but can be upt to 100ft across.
Life is simply better when driving through mud!!

The road is actually ThornFORD road, bit of a give away in the name I guess, I was going to have a look today to see how it was running, and wondering what has been seen downstream
I have seen it as a meer trickle and in full flow, anyone with an ounce of sense wouldn't try to cross it, but I did hear it on the radio today and had to chuckle.

Come on what did you see?

Nah. Thats new mill ford down new mill lane. You can get to it from either new mill lane funnily enough or from Eversley down st neots road and then down through lower common. Seen plenty of cars stuck in that ford. Used to be a postie to both sides of the ford. never tried taking a postie van through. wouldnt have been popular!!! I did that ford last sunday as well as few mins before that mud clubber went through. shame i missed them. Just down stream is ford lane and another ford crossing but worse than new mill lane. slightly deeper with massive pot holes either side that my tow bar catches on.

Headley looks very deep. is the lower car a vw sharan that I am guessing isnt designed for 10ft deep fords? I am no expert in mechanics but think that 1 is obvious!!!

Not really sure what the silver one was?? guessing a renault?? the people carrier was about 100 yds down stream (backwards) and the silver "car" was probally 300 yds further down the stream (also backwards)

Im guessing recovering them would be good to see

Some people are just daft. A guy I used to work with in Norfolk, took a Job Escort through a ford that he thought was OK, (strictly against orders though) the intake for the engine was at bumper height and the engine ingested lots of fresh water, and blew the head off.
He got done for dereliction of duty. Very expensive to repair, but not as bad as though two in the piccys.

No need to guess Dan it is all in colour photos and black and white writing

Would prob be worth asking the owners if 1 could buy the cars off them for silly money if the insurance wont pay up. Dry the car out, new head on engine or even engine rebuild would cost less than the price of a good non floating type mpv I would have thought?

Not sure how you would stand given where they are. I would suspect the council could probobly authorise it though.

Poor thing is sat there watter papping at the window sills and obviously full.
