Is it a Beetle, then you can fit a 1302 engine (1600)

You could fit the type 4 engine (2000)

or go mad and fit a Porches engine, yes they do

Or is it something more, conventional?  Well I may have a spare 3.9 and a big hammer you can borrow.

Seriously, pics, details, budget etc.

I've seen various engines from later golfs fitted into mk2 including turbo versions, VR6's (turboed + nitrous) as well as a tidy conversion using a 150hp PB TDI engine. How big do you want to go?

Alternatively find a scraped mk2 golf with a 1600 in running order.

Its all do-able, but I would vouch to say that unless you want something really special that its not worth it.

With the almost worthless value of S/H cars these days it is usually easier and cheaper to just replace your current car with something faster.

I looked at doing a similar engine upgrade on a 1litre Fiesta van that I used to own, but eventually decided it was worth more as it was and decided to swap it for an XR2 rather than transplant the running gear which was my original plan.

In the end I bought a 2.9 4x4 Sierra Estate instead!

If you want a project then go for it!

I'm just being the boring sense of reason (where did that come from?! ).  Many VWs of that era will have good shells, so replacing your car with an early VR6 or GTi will be much better value and better engineered than doing a mix and match job yourself.  Be easier and cheaper too, but possibly not as much fun! :D

TBH as already said, its not worth it. If you want an easy life then find the apropriate Audi A3 of the same age and do a swap. If you are feeling really mad the S3 1.8T will go over quite easilly as will the 3.2V6 from the TT Quattro

Thats the TT engine :) You'll be able to raid the brakes of the donor veichle. Assuming you have one. A low milage 1.8 20VT will set you back a BIG wad of cash. Looked at one for the zook and engine + ECu with 8K miles you are looking at well over £1.5K

Also found in SEAT leon Cupra R, Cupra was 180Bhp, with the Ibiza kicking out 150 Bhp like the VW Golf.

Have seen engine only for £800, but that was a couple of months back.

the obvious answer would be a 1.8 gtiu lump.  an amazing engine on so many levels.  but you have to take so much from the donor car you may as well buy a real GTi for 500 quid..  (i have a stunner for sale for 600...  )

have a serious think before you spend the dosh! Buying a clean gti may be the answer! Would cost more to swap engines anyway. Maybe vr6 is answer if you want something different - dont forget to put the strengthening in the shell as small engined ones have different shell.

You also have to bear in mind that a 1.4 escort can keep up with a gti on the straight! More than a bit annoying if you just spent a bomb building it!
